#BringBackJuly

Please read before commenting!
--------------------
As I have said before; I am AWARE that the "full version" of the event is not available and it will not be until next year. I am AWARE that the admin and art teams put in a lot of work for this event. I am very thankful for them. Xylax, Deertush, 7th, you guys are amazing and I love you. This thread is in no way meant to downplay your skills or capabilities, because your art is fantastic and i and everyone else appreciate everything you do for us to keep the game fresh and beautiful. This thread is being posted because I would like to hear suggestions and input from the rest of the community, because i am aware that myself and most of my friends very much dislike what has happened to the July event in terms of the rehaul.

What the Data Shows
--------------------

As the Lioden Admins have shared with us today,
this was the feedback given on the event survey last week:

2021-july-survey-02.png

This feedback is overwhelming. 36.4% of players said they liked everything about the event. 33.1% of players said that they liked the content, but not the storyline. This is a total of 69.5 percent of players. That's almost 70%, or 7/10 players.

If you were to remove the outlier data, which would be the "not applicable" padding, and instead only focus on those who have played the old event, it would be a total of 80.4% overall. This brings us to..... 69.5 out of 80.4 players overall liking the old event.

That leads me to the following solution, based upon the facts and evidence laid before me with surveys from the lioden population. The problem wasn't the characters. The problem wasn't the event. The problem was the STORYLINE.

So, what do are you suggesting?
--------------------

The Lioden Admins stated in the news post that the characters will be retired and the event
will be moving on.. but this is NOT what the people have voted for,
and not what the people want!

Please, it can be worked out so that everyone is happy.
Here's a bulleted list of what I had in mind:

✗ -- RETCON THE STORYLINE, NOT THE CHARACTERS. -- ✗

What a joy, that we live in a world where things that are fictional can be changed! When the event came out, people mourned what Apedemak was and who he used to be. Everyone loved him! We can go BACK to that! All that has to be said is, "We understand the story did not come off as appropriate or sensitive to those who it may have effected. We're going to do better." and then.. make a brand new storyline! Where those things NEVER happened! It literally never has to be talked about again! It was a mistake, and mistakes can be forgiven and forgotten!

✗ -- REPLACE ZIMBABWE WITH THE CELESTIAL EXPLORE. -- ✗

This is the biggest compromise I can think of; Zimbabwe did not fit into the event, and neither did firefly catching in the forest. But the Celestial explore has potential, way more potential with the Celestial Family than Zimbabwe ever did. It would be merging the two events together, so everyone can be happy. It could even end up being part of fetch quests, where you have to collect stars from space creatures in order for Menhit to line her nest for her and Apollyon's celestial cubs; all it needs is tweaking for how it works, and it would be the perfect replacement.

✗ -- IMPROVE ON THE LORE OF THE CELESTIAL LIONS. -- ✗

There was so much that could have been done. Tefnut's backstory, Apollyon's Backstory: It could have gone so far! There could have been one year where we helped Menhit prepare for her cubs with apollyon by doing funny little tasks for her, there could have been a year where we met Apollyon's parents and helped them solve problems for the fire lords. There's so much that could be improved on and expanded, the old storyline could have been left completely in the dust!

--------------------

On Merging the Events
--------------------

✗ -- THE CELESTIAL ANTHOLOGY : ADD A SHORT NEW STORYLINE EVERY YEAR. -- ✗

On Year 1, We focus on Apedemak. His story introduces the Celestial Lions, Who they are, and how they got here. His focus is on getting back to his family, and our lion assists him on helping to craft the Celestial Portal. To thank us for agreeing to help him, Apedemak blesses us with the ability to become temporarily celestial: our lions become just like the starry-pelted gods, for a short time, and are able to access the Celestial Explore to help him. Once the portal is unlocked, on Tier 3, we find out that Celestial lions can pass through it as many times as they like, but regular lions cannot. Apedemak leaves, but he promises he will see you soon. This opens the door for new celestial lions to come through every year, to continue the anthology.

This not only includes Apedemak, Apollyon, Menhit, The Demiurge and Tefnut, but there's also a handful of Celestal Pelts that have not been used yet that could be brand new lions: Dawn, Sunrise, Leonid, Stratosphere, Meteorite, Moonstone, and Labradorite.

✗ -- THE CELESTIAL EXPLORE: ENEMIES REFLECT THE NEW ANTHOLOGY. -- ✗

Instead of having space dragons and aliens that are insane for our lions to even attempt to fight, the Celestial Explore can instead have enemies that reflect the current theme of the year. Not only would it keep the art fresh, but it would feel like a new event without really being one.

For this event, we could fight starry versions of regular enemies and new enemies to complete quests: Collect horns made of light from Celestial Wildebeest, Fight Celestial Lions who have also gone astray, and more. Once an entry for Menhit is added, new enemies that reflect the her anthology could be added. Big Golden Sun-birds to collect feathers to line her nest, Dark Shadowcats that want to steal her cubs once they're born. The possibilities are endless.

In Closing
--------------------
Please, admins. We all love this game, that's why we're here.
We love every part of it, and the July Characters were a big part of that.

Consider reflecting over the points i've made above and the points that people will make in the comments, and hearing what we have to say about the game we've all watched grow together.

Oh, the problem was always the storyline. Most of us were aware of that due to the explicit and disturbing content.
Though I've been told that wasn't always a piece in the storyline, and at some point had been added.
Some new art and a rehauled storyline would've been perfectly fine with a lot of people.

I for one am pretty content with how the event is right now, but I wouldn't really care too much if it were to somewhat revert back a little.
A lot of us liked the old characters, I'm not really sure why we have to do away with them all together /shrug

Tying them into whatever new storyline is created next year in some way would be pretty cool, rather than just a homage. A lot of people loved them.
Just get rid of that icky part that became one of the sole reasons people hated the storyline.

Lore for the Celestial Raffle lionesses would be pretty cool to incorporate into the NEW storyline, I'm not going to lie. I don't think we've even had a taste of that besides what's written on the Celestial Lioness page when you go to attempt to impress.
"Enchanting lionesses from the cosmos are phasing into this realm after having heard incredible tales of this land from other Celestial entities. The most notable of these entities just so happens to be a very noble dwarf Demiurge, creator of the Leo Constellation from which these lionesses originated."
Kind of seems like the Demiurge has some kind of influence in their origin realm? Like a prophet or an important figure?

i miss beating up apollyon in explore for those shards

I think this is a great idea, I completely agree. #bringbackJuly. Please Lioden, let us at least have the event a lot of us all know and love. I know it might be more work but so is scrapping an entire event for new characters we have no attachment to. The old storyline was problematic but the characters were not

That one chart's not the full picture. 61.9% of the voters feel positively in some way about the new event. This definitely overlaps with the people who liked the old event, too. Which one anyone preferred wasn't a question (and it would have been hard to answer if it was, at least for me). Almost everything I liked about the old version of the event was carried over into the new one, minus the storyline mechanics as there is no storyline yet.

I've always been of the camp that I wouldn't mind if events got rotated out every now and then, so long as the items from the rotated-out event remain obtainable. I like to see new things. It doesn't mean I don't like the old things. I'd be sad to see the Draco Demiurge storyline (or whatever they're planning) and those space eggs never get to be a thing.

I don't mind what's being suggested here, I just don't like my vote of feeling positively about the old event being taken to back up reverting the theming.

I'll 100% breakdown that chart, too!

25.6% of people say that they're excited for this current event and to see something new, while 36.3% say it has potential and 17.6% say that they aren't sure about it. On top of this, 11% say they REALLY don't like it, and roughly 10% say that they just don't like it.

"I think it has potential" does not mean they are in full support of the new event; they are just saying that it has potential, as i have said already in my post that it does (under replacing zimbabwe)

"i'm not sure about this one" also does not mean they are in support, and don't even think positively enough of the event to say that it has potential.

Breaking this chart down into percentages, 25% say they're excited to see the new event, 36% think it might have potential, 17% are not sure, and 20% do not like it. This does not have a group of outliers, so this stays at 100% instead of being factored down.

Compared to the roughly 10% of players who did not like the old event as i listed in my post, the poll that you've linked instead shows that 20% do not like the new one. That would be double the people. On top of that, the 36% of people who liked the old event completely without any changes, is the same amount of people that think the new event could have potential. That is not people who like the event. That is people who think it may have potential.

I would not say that 61% of voters feel positively in some way due to your chart, as that would be stretching what the pool of players were asked. I would say 61% are OPTIMISTIC and hope for the best, but not that they feel positively. I for one said that the event has potential in my own vote; because it does. That does not mean that I prefer it over the old event, though.
On top of this, while 61% may feel optimistic, 39% either do not like it at all or do not think it has potential. In the grand scheme of the site, where player numbers are involved (and running off of the theory that everyone with an account has voted, even though that's not true and the real number of voters is unknown,) 39% of the 237,000 players is 92,000. So, 92,000 players do not like the event at all or do not think it has potential. Comparing this to the 144,000 that think it has potential or like it, that doesn't really make a big enough difference to warrant the voices of the 92,000 who say they completely dislike it away.

I also did not say anywhere in my post that the old event should go back to the way it used to be and that the votes of the people who feel positively about the new event should be tossed to the side. I think the numbers from your chart support what i am saying more than negating it; People preferred the old event, and would like to see it incorporated with the parts of the new one that are good rather than the entire event being thrown out for something that almost 40% think does not have any potential.

I actually would like to correct myself, as on checking the graphs again, the admins DID include the number of votes tallied: 854.

39% of 854 is 333
61% of 854 is 520

That is a difference of 187 people. 333 people think the new event has no chance at all, 213 are excited to see how it goes, and 307 think that it might have some potential.

Support.

I get admins wanting to take the "safe route" never mentioning characters that had triggering biographies again, but any event can be played in a better light, it just need a tiny bit of careful, creative planning.

Agreed! I loved the old characters, so much so that my king is heavily inspired by them - it would be such a shame to retire them when so many people loved them, just not the storyline.

YES. THIS. THANK YOU for putting into words what I couldn't.

Instead of wiping the whole old event and acting like it was never a thing, by replacing it with something new, why not just FIX the issues with the old event? By replacing it with a whole new event, it just seems like the old one is being avoided. Avoiding fixing it but then axing it completely and replacing it.

I loved the characters in the old event. They don't HAVE to be tied to the old storyline. Write them a new storyline. Comic books can take the same characters and rework their stories time and time again, so why couldn't that approach apply here?

I'm sure I can't be the only one. There's so much I liked about the old event, and nothing I really like about the new one (aside from the artwork). Sometimes, replacing an entire event is not the way to go about things. I always looked forward to the July event, it was one of the few I loved and couldn't wait for. Now it's gone and it's just another month that I'm tempted to hide the event entirely. :(

I’ve always fet thst lioden should hire a writer! The writers job is simply to write cohesive dialogue and story elements and lore, I’m not saying they haven’t done a good job so far but someone who’s experienced in the field and art of storytelling would not be unhealthy for the site.

Your concept of merging the two is the best of both worlds. I dislike the aesthetic of this event and the mechanics and the prices, essentially I dislike everything about it, but my editing it and merging it with something I really cared about I think we’ve got a recipe for something fresh and new while being familiar and fun. your suggestions are well said!

If you isolate the 80.4% of responses from people who were on Lioden when the previous July event was in place, you get roughly 41% of them liking the content but not the storyline, and roughly 45% approval of the entire July event, storyline and all. That is a huge percentage of players who liked the original event.

I’ve also noticed a recent trend of how battle-heavy and devoid of lore or encounters Lioden events have become. June has no encounters but snakes to fight, and July has nothing except flavor text when you find meteorite shards. Not everyone has a high stat king who can breeze through battles, and a heavy emphasis on endless snake/dragon battles and nothing else for two straight months is frustrating for many players.

Having not been present during the event, but having heard/read the story line, I find it kind of bland and feel that a professional writer should be sought out. I think there are plenty of writers who would volunteer for this position. Despite the fact that I liked the characters, I feel the storyline needs to be completely rewritten.

Even having a high stat king is little to no benefit for these fights - I tried to do some battles in Celestial Explore for kicks with my 8.5k stat side.

It was more of a grind than usual statting. It's... it's more boring and tedious than *statting*

I do actually like the aesthetic of the current July event, but I feel like something like this would be incredibly engaging, story-wise. This is of course a great idea for the sake of making the characters work with the new setting and for giving them a workable rewrite but it just... it seems like a really engaging event in general? I would love to play this.

100% This would be the best of both worlds. I agree with Hearteater that they should hire a writer if they hadn't done so already so we can avoid the needlessly edgy crap that was inserted in the last July storyline and so the new story flows well into the lore.
