Something that’s been bothering me a while as a reptile hobbyist is the naming of the white snake decors as “Albino Snake”.
This is inaccurate, as Albino snakes are usually made of oranges. Albinism in reptiles is different than mammals. For snakes, it removes the darker pigmentation (Blacks, Greys, Browns), and leaves behind an orange and red color.
Albinos are also called “Amels”, or “Amelanistic”.

So what are these completely White Snakes called?
Leucistic!
The Leucistic gene takes all pigmentation out of the individual, leaving the white scale color seen in albino mammals which causes the confusion.

As for those curious, the reasoning for this difference is that most reptiles have more pigmentation than mammals, therefore when melanin is subtracted, there is still those red, orange, and yellow hues, though not all reptiles are like this as seen with albino alligators, which are white like their mammalian adversaries.

I hope that the wrongly named decors will be renamed, as it does spread misinformation about a known misinformed topic of albinism in reptiles.
