BACKGROUND LORE

Player's Note: PLEASE tell me if you like the story and want to continue reading it, but are sensitive to any topics mentioned in it - so I may further add a toggle to any potentially upsetting themes for anyone else who may read the story. I just want to be fair and inclusive to the readers.

Gellimar’s pride was a pride of ancient lions (i.e. primals) that inhabited a large forest to the South of Africa, where the plains meet the rainforest. All that can be seen of the trees are their long, pale, sun-bleached trunks, stretching high into the sky. A dense mist lay at the edges that was said to have mysterious effects on the animals that wandered there, getting them lost. The lions there were said to be one of the last remaining lineages of the lions from long, long ago that still held their unique appearances, the ones that differed from the lions that now inhabited the rest of Africa.

The ancient lions, however, were already a dying breed. Their genes couldn’t keep up with the genetics of modern lions, and in fact, they pulled in more outside genes to even be able to have a chance at breeding. It came down to it that very few ancient lions were ever born, and even fewer that were born from them.

Enter, Marfara, the King of Gellimar’s Pride. A son born to two long-deceased lions, who led his pride well and had many cubs of his own, though not one of them were of primal bloodline. He ruled in peace, his lionesses hidden in the depths of Gellimar’s mist. At the height of his reign, towards the end of his life, he was the king of twelve lionesses and many adolescents.

The end of Marfara’s reign was the start of what was called The Silent End, a vicious illness that spread to most of Gellimar’s lions and left them still and lifeless by dawn’s light. The Silent End left only two survivors - the aging Marfara, and his recently adult daughter, Quiet, who had befriended the spirits of the ancient lions. Her pelt was far from the one she had been born with, due to the mysterious powers of the spirits.

With a heavy heart, and the knowledge that he could not rebuild his pride, the old king set to it that Quiet would know all he could pass on onto the young lioness, and gave her the King name of Hiwot, for he hoped she would bring life to the hallowed pride and rebuild it to surpass what he had been able to do. He hoped he could see the glimmer in her eyes and even more so, the first pitter patter of little paws from her.

ONE DAY UNTIL QUIET IS CROWNED AND THE SOFT LIOLOCKE BEGINS.

- May only claim one lioness per day.

THE DAWN OF QUIET'S REIGN

It wasn’t long after sunrise when Quiet and her father slipped from the shadows of Gellimar’s embrace. Marfara was hesitant to leave his home and the territory he had reigned peacefully in for many seasons, and Quiet wasn’t much better. She had spent her entire life here, after all. Tucked away from modern lions, despite them both being of modern bloodline.

She stopped for a second as her paw reached the edge of the territory. “Do we have to go, father?” Fear held a grip in her belly. She didn’t want to leave.

The aging lion nodded. “There is nothing left for us to stay. You are but one lioness, after all. Hunting will be difficult. As King, it is your responsibility to find more.”

“But, you’re the male of us! Wouldn’t it be… your job?” part of a King’s job was to claim lionesses to hunt for the pride. She knew that, she just wished… it wouldn’t be awkward for her to claim one. She was a lioness, after all.

“I am the old king of this pride. The lionesses are yours. But,” he chuckled. “I can give you pointers on how to woo a lady.”

“Father!” her pelt felt hot with embarrassment.

He gave her a playful paw on her ear. “I’m just messing with you. Come on, let’s go.”

With that, the two were off. The old King, the Grandpaw, and the new King.

Marfara had said that the open savannah would be safe enough for them for the time being, as they weren’t in the mood for a fight and needed food in their bellies before they could continue. He spent many a day patrolling there, and many lone lionesses - perfect for their cause - would be there. Perhaps one of them could be persuaded.

Sometime into her patrol and she had discovered, and hunted, both an otter and a hare. It wasn’t much, but their bellies would surely thank her. She had eaten the remains of a leopard’s meal, so she nudged them both over to her father. “Take it.”

“You know, you’re not supposed to be hunting for me anymore-”

“Father, I am still a lioness of Gellimar. Until your last breath, I will always hunt for you. You’ve always fed us before you fed yourself. Besides, I’ve already eaten. You need to keep up your strength.”

It was then that a lioness the color of wheat appeared on the horizon. As the wind lifted to Quiet’s nose, she could smell no King upon the lioness’ pelt. “Is… that a prideless?”

“Yes!” the old king grew excited. “She’ll help us, surely!”

The two trotted over swiftly, but stopped a few tail lengths away. “It’s your moment,” he gave her forehead a quick lick of encouragement. “Do your best, but if she isn’t interested, don’t follow her. They hate that.”

Quiet took a deep breath. She needed help to hunt. For her father and for herself.

“Oh - use your King name. It gives validity.”

. . .

Sage was her name, and she decided to follow them for a while, before deciding that it was not in her best interests to follow a female King and her aging father.

Marfara placed his neck around his daughter. “I wasn’t a dreamboat when I started out, either. But - it is a bit unconventional, what we’ve done. So… don’t be hard on yourself. Let’s go.”

Saddened, Quiet followed.
