hello! although ive been playing this game nearly a decade, I still have yet to attempt a full-blown, 10 mark base + eye fully breed-only type breeding project, and as I've been rather active and rather bored on this game lately, I figured id ask around about how to get started on one!

I clearly know the basic tenets-- design a lion you'd like to aim for, look for lionesses that match markings, base, slot, combo factors, etc, and breed through that-- but I guess I'm moreso looking for strategies? im sure everyone does it differently, but if any of y'all have successfully done this or are doing it-- what are the steps you've taken?

when is it worth kinging a lion you've bred to have, say, half the traits? when should gnaws be used? what items should always be used to ensure the greatest success? what items should I invest in and what are wastes of money in the long run? what's something you wish you knew when you started your project?

thank you guys for your time, and if you have any tips or advice in general id love to hear them! ^^

for context, this is my design at the moment :)

I'm currently in progress with a project, though mine would "succeed" with less than 10 marks. It's incredibly difficult to get all 10 marks you want on a lion, but definitely rewarding if you do! I'm going the easier route with a plan to get BO eyes, mane, base, and mottled rosette/stripes, and then RMA to fill in the rest of the slots with whatever BO markings ! get lucky with :)

It's been a work in progress for ah, 2 ish years now? After my hiatus I switched from Sunrise to Bandit (still love Sunrise, but Bandit looks better with BO imo and Sunrise is a great colorbomb base). Gonna say I probably didn't do it properly at the start lol, but I'll make a list of what I think is the best way assuming we're starting from scratch. Some steps can happen at the same time depending on luck of course!
Step 1 is to get a cub with the base you need and king it. It makes the project much cheaper since you won't need to stud out as much. If your current king is still youngish, you have time to try and breed another cub with more attributes you need if you want to.
Step 2: breed with lionesses that have the eye color and/or mane shape and color that you need - if you have multiple that you would be fine with, that widens your options! Once you get a cub with one or both attributes that you need, king it when your current king/queen is set to retire. Or early, depending on your budget of course. I always kept mine until the end of their life :) If you don't have a suitable heir by the time your main lion is old, just mut/heritage rep them and continue until you get a better heir. I use old boys which starts my queens at 8yo.
3. Obtain lionesses with at least 1 (ideally more) of the markings you need for the project. Avoid rosettes at this stage (don't look at my queen lmao I don't follow my own rules D:). They're too difficult to pass reliably without gnaws, which get expensive, so you want to use them towards the end when you have the rest of your markings, That'll give you the best chance to get the complete look in a breeding. You can get the lionesses for this step much earlier and stud out to other Dawn kings to try and get more lions with the markings into your pride as well.

I think I lost track, but that's kind of the bulk of it. In my own project, I tried to get the markings first and now I'm going for the eyes and mane, which is proving to be a challenge (especially when the stupid markings don't pass) so with the current iteration of my queen I dropped a couple of the markings I wanted. Can't be picky I guess :p

You'll definitely want to stock up on ochre saltlicks and gnawrocks in September. Luckily your design requires only one rosette so you won't be using double gnaws on each breeding ^^ Opal saltlicks are great as well, and they're only 500 SB in the monkey business. Matte isn't a BO skin (uh I think) so you don't need to worry about rock salt to pass skin color. Only if you decide to switch it to a BO skin you'll want those.

I checked out your design as well as the existing lions with the markings in those slots, and you've definitely done your homework as far as making sure at least 1 lion exists with the mark!! Or you got lucky haha. The biggest struggle is gonna be that Seal Indri marking, I think. You could either wait for that player to breed more cubs with that marking (and risk them going inactive forever) or try and snag a heat from either of their lionesses somewhat soon. Might wanna use a buffy and a gnaw to ensure that it passes, but if that's out of your price range atm you can roll the dice :) Hell, maybe they'll sell the adol which would make it easier for you. For the rosette, I'd recommend ignoring that problem until you get everything else, and then throw a bunch of money into RMAs!

My problem with my own project is that I'm impulsive. I do things out of order cause I want something, and then it makes my completion more difficult ^^; Though I've been lucky that a lot of the things I want happen to be available through breeding DUs (essentially doubling my breeding item effectiveness and such). Might be worth looking into seeing if anyone has a DU with a couple of the traits you need (eyes and mane should be easy enough since it's popular!)

Up to you if you want to stick to clean breeding, though. I tried at the beginning, but ultimately it's just easier to use dirty lions as an option while you're working on your project. Wider range and whatnot. I rep my queens to G1 immediately anyway so it doesn't matter to me how she gets there :)

Sorry for the essay, I love breeding projects!

This is incredibly helpful and I can't express how grateful I am for your input! ^^ I luckily do have quite a few resources because ive been around for so long without really throwing much into hardcore breeding, so I have a lot of gnaws, crunches, and buffs stashed. The lion I designed is definitely a REACH, I did make sure to choose marks that have a fair number of lions in game, but still challenging, and most have at least one stud kinged. Seal indri will definitely be a challenge but I did reach out to that user about reverse breeding and they were super nice!

I'm not 100% set on any of these marks in the exact spots, I'd be fine with cele specks instead of shine, etc, but I love July marks so I kind of centered around those.

So what I gathered most is 1. king a lion with the basics already (base, eyes, mane, etc) and 2. try to mainly purchase lions with those traits, and then breed from there? I won't lie, I was kind of approaching this mark-first as well, but on that note ill definitely try to get eyes and whatnot down first!

I was searching the TC earlier today for lions with the marks to start and IMMEDIATELY got extremely overwhelmed and considered changing the entire design. I think for my first project the fact that most of my marks are 1-2 stud and 100-300 lion rarity is difficult and a bit stupid. Will have to sit down and revamp for sure!
