heyo! i'm relatively experienced in LD stuff, plus i just really like to help people out, so if anyone's new feel free to shoot me a message or a friend request or just reply down below with your questions!
i'll probably be the most helpful to very new players who are having trouble getting the hang of mechanics, but i can do some research to provide answers for more in-depth or specific questions.

hey, yeah i can absolutely help you out! i'm no expert, but here's a breakdown on battling.

i'm focusing on the first 3 in every category, because roar, rest, and flee are always available (i'll cover those in a bit)
- opening moves: charge, pounce, trample.
trample is most effective against small enemies, and large enemies or enemies in groups won't be affected by it. pounce deals moderate damage, and potentially grabs the opponent, which opens you up to 'clinch' moves. charge is my personal favorite- it doesn't stun or grab opponents, but it deals high damage and works no matter your opponent's size.
as far as I can tell, you can't miss when you use these moves, but they can be ineffective depending on who you're fighting.

- standard moves: bite, swipe, and grab.
grab is my least used out of these. it deals very little damage. however, it does have a high chance of grabbing the opponent, as the name suggests. bite deals low to moderate damage, and it's a pretty solid move, but not outstanding. it has a chance of grabbing the opponent, but not as high as the grab move. swipe is a standard combat move that deals moderate damage, and i tend to use it the most in battle.
i also find that you could miss multiple times in a row when using bite. it's not a very reliable move imo.

as opposed to the standard and opening moves, which have 3 options, there are four options for clinch moves.
- 'clinch' moves: pound, claw, kick, and strangle. you can only use a clinch move if your opponent is grabbed, which you can achieve using the pounce, bite, or grab moves.
strangle can immobilize enemies, but if they're too big, it won't work very well. kick works pretty well against larger enemies, while claw is most effective against thin-skinned enemies. so claw wouldn't do well against something like an elephant, but kick would. pound deals moderate damage and potentially stuns the opponent, which is pretty nice.
if you have your opponent grabbed and it doesn't seem to be doing much for you, hit the release button.

then there's roar, rest, and flee. flee is pretty simple, you automatically exit a battle. however, you lose.
roar is most useful on more timid opponents, and it can cause them to freeze in fear, giving you another attack, or if they're especially cowardly, they might just run away, which means you win. however, more aggressive enemies may be unfazed, or even get more aggravated by it.
rest allows you to regain a small amount of health, but some larger enemies may see it as an opportunity to charge at you. after a rest, you'll be able to use an opener again.
i find that large herbivores that you encounter in explore, like water buffalo and rhinos, attack you when you rest and are actually able to stun you and hit you repeatedly.
this next section will probably help the most!
what i personally do while battling is the following steps:
- charge
- bite
- rest
- charge
- swipe until the enemy's HP runs out.
if you get lucky and bite grabs the opponent, instead of resting, use pound.

also, i got all of this info from the wiki, which also has some good tips.
