Well, to start off easy, applicators (which add/change/remove markings, bases, eyes, manes, etc. on your lion) are almost entirely found in event shops. Each month has a new event, and, for example, February has the merlot, peach, cherry, etc applicators which are usually highly sought after. October has the more hell-themed apps, and December is all about blue (just to name a couple). Out of season, these applicators can get really expensive so I recommend you plan and stock accordingly. (January wiki here, there's a dropdown at the top where you can choose any month event) The oasis, which is year-round, has removers and randomizers for markings, bases, and (I think?) eyes.

Now, if you were talking about decorations for lions, (items that go OVER the lion, as opposed to changing the genetics) those are earned everywhere. Hunting, patrolling, exploring, and playing games, are some of the more easy ones. The big bulk of decorations are, again, obtained through the event shops. Just take a look at this month, almost the entirety of the shop is decors, and most (if not all) the event shops look like this.

There are also custom decors, which are player-made, that you can buy. These are more of a later-game purchase, because they get quite expensive (the base price that players can set is 3GB, and that's just the cost to make copies so they don't earn that 3gb if someone buys it)

Now onto the more complicated answer;
There is no setting to change your background. What you see in players' dens is CSS, which is a lot of coding. I don't personally dabble in den CSS, so I can try to explain this to you but katie can do it better than I ever could. To my knowledge, she is one of the most well-known den coders(?) on lioden, and she has plenty of free templates you can use as long as you give credit. The more time you spend on lioden, the more you'll see people with her (credited!) CSS in their dens.
