Cotton root barks (1 each, bought at the Oasis) are the most accessible mutation item so I'd recommend those- they seem to have a 10-15% rate of mutations so if you applied cotton root barks to 10 lionesses you'll almost definitely get a mutie! You can also try studding to mutated studs, like piebald, patches, or primal studs as they will have a chance at passing their mutation.

VLF lionesses also have a decent chance at producing a mutation, at least a slightly higher chance than one with good or higher fertility.

Primals are complicated. To have a chance at a primal or primal variation you can use an item called Pennyroyal for 1 in the Oasis and give it to a primal, ferus, smilus or a felis stud. If you want a smilus, it can only pass to male cubs. So using an item to give you male cubs will help in that.

You may also get primal fangs which are a fail of either variant.
