Hi!

Exactly what it says on the tin. As you can see from this screenshot, trade ad spam and other rule-breaking material went unpunished when posted in user's comment boxes as the staff believes chat boxes should be 'self-moderated'. I first believed this applies to all rules, assuming there surely isn't some kind of double standard in which only half the rules are moderated and the other half aren't, but it seems that while inflammatory conduct is moderated in chat boxes spam and ads still aren't. My question is: why are SOME rules moderated but not ALL the rules? Spam and unsolicited trade ads aren't allowed on Lioden. Why are stud ads in comment den boxes allowed? Why does the Code of Conduct not apply to den boxes to some extent, to where things not allowed in main chat or forums are allowed here?

My questions are:
-What's the line between what is moderated in terms of chat messages and what isn't? Will some mods crack down on case-by-case issues in modbox while some other mods wouldn't?
-If someone sends 1,251 messages in my chat box, is that spam or harassment? Would I have to delete all these myself?
-Why can people send their trade into the den box of everyone online onsite and not be punishable when there's even rules for how frequently you can post trades in sales chat?

I'm glad that on this website you can receive an account standing hit for politely DMing someone asking about a lion that's not for sale, and you can receive an account standing hit for asking whether a cub named 'kill' is for sale because it's considered spam, but sending 560 messages in comment boxes is not even considered reportable.

In my opinion this needs mended immediately. Simple as this: The Code of Conduct should fully apply to den chat boxes. No new rules even need made. Just actually fully moderate them.

Bonus suggestion: Remove Comment Box Disabled Message

Support, for the sake of consistency. Two related tangents:
1) The differentiating rules between the rest of the site (forums, chat, pms) are not mentioned anywhere within COC as far as I'm aware- this seems strange to me. Rules for the site should be laid out clearly. Having rules being vauge or unmentioned within the COC is a bad idea for the site. If chatboxes do not get moderated completely, I would personally like to see this exception mentioned within COC.
2) In theory, I get it. Moderating your own comment box isn't that strenuous or anything- yeah, I can delete the advertisement immediately. Having it be self moderated theoretically makes sense- it takes a bit of the load off the mods. But, if comment boxes are self moderated in regards to advertisement to take a load off the mods, are they a good idea to begin with? What purpose do comment boxes serve, anyways? I personally would not take issue if they were removed, if moderating them fully is something that cannot be done.

Support, if comment boxes can be "self moderated" via deleting the comments and blocking the user then they might as well stop moderating PMs as well. Polite messages asking whether or not a lion is for sale is considered "harassment" but genuine harassment should be "self moderated" and taken care of by the user as long as it's in a comment box? This site amazes me every day.

Yeah.. i dont think people should be posting anything nsfw in comment boxes bc 1. Most people dont consent. 2. They could be a minor. 3. Its gross honesty. 4. That minor could even be too young for the game. Im sure theres a lot of them around which is.. normal. 5. Minors could pass by such a comment in some elses den.

Really just dont be weird

Flagging is a good idea. Since mods only have to look at comment boxes for flagged comments.

If they don't have enough time or enough mods to look at or moderate chatboxes, why add them in the first place, though? I originally made this suggestion because someone reported stud ad spam and nothing happened because of a 'self-moderation' policy. They'd have to change the rules to what I'm asking for first to even care about anything being flagged, otherwise it's just our job.

I mean, they probably added them thinking the site would be sensible enough considering it's mostly 18+ people here. Sadly they were wrong. I'm not saying they can't do it, I'm just saying that flagging is better than expecting it to be moderated like mainchat.

There are thousands of chatboxes/players. Expecting it to be moderated like mainchat is impossible. It'd be impossible for any amount of mods. Which is why flagging is foolproof- it still gets these people a slap on the wrist whilst making sure the COC is upheld and the feature can stay. I like chatboxes which is why I'd prefer they don't be a whole 'moderate entirely automatically or get rid' situation- because the only humanly possible option is for them to get rid in that scenario. The problem for me personally is when people don't get punished for breaking the COC, and I think that's most of people's problems too, flagging of which would solve. It'd be unfair to get rid of it because of a good handful of bad eggs.

The point of suggesting flagging, was to come to a middleground and present something possible and low effort which can be moderated just the same as pms and main chat. Pms work the EXACT same way, they don't hawkeye our PMs. Being critical of flagging because it isn't automated chatboxes is being critical of pms, you might as well be advocating for the removal of PMs AND chatboxes if you're not happy to advocate for chatbox flagging.

Edit: I'm not arguing AGAINST OP. I'm just arguing for us to expect chat flagging instead of automatic moderating. That's it!

@Serval
Theres a couple thousand players and its growing every week. It would be impossible to expect them to moderate comment boxes like chat. They can barely moderate chat sometimes as it with how busy it can get.

We are aware of this being a self moderation issue. They arenโ€™t arguing with you at all. Just added more reasons it probably should be moderated.

The flagging system would help give them a reason to moderate the comment box. Trust me i dont want peopleโ€™s ads in my comment box either but im not active enough in chat to have said issue.

If its on the site the rules should be reinforced. Period.

Supported.

It would be incredibly hard to manage though. There's so many profiles and chat has a hard enough time being fully moderated as is.

At the very least we should be able to report comments or something. Some of the things people leave on others' dens is downright foul.

I don't think anyone is suggesting mods go through every single user's comment box and watch them in order to look for and delete messages that break ToS. But as of current, if you report something in your comment box, they don't do anything about it. THAT should change.

Adding the ability to flag/report comments would inherently imply that they start enforcing the ToS on the chat box. It's a shame they wrongfully assumed people could self-moderate, but hopefully they change it. I'm not sure why they don't have the option in the first place, but still. What this suggestion is for.

Again, adding, I was never arguing with OP and agreed on the suggestion. I'm aware that flagging implies the same thing, I never meant to imply anything different. As Einar said, it doesn't hurt to add a specific way we'd like it to be moderated into the suggestion- I was originally going to make my own suggestion for it, but it felt pointless having two different suggestions when it could just be a few sentences added to this one. There's nothing wrong with telling mods exactly what we want. We don't have to take it step by step. If we're not specific, they may add some other washier way to do it. We don't want that. We need to be concise and fully clear.

Sorry if I'm taking people wrong. I just don't understand why flagging shouldn't be added to the suggestion. I thought clarity was key.
