I’ve seen the idea of a snow leopard x lion hybrid pop up in chat multiple times now and, while that idea is very unlikely to actually be implemented into the game, I thought about some more realistic alternatives. Snow leopards have a very thick fur coat because of the cold climate they live in so… why not add a “Winter Coat” fur mutation? A fur mut that could be similar to Dorsal Fur or OG Fur and would perfectly fit into the December event. Now you might ask, why would a lion ever grow a winter coat in the savannah? Well that’s because they don’t BUT it doesn’t mean they can’t! In the past modern lions lived in areas cold enough to snow, so the genes for winter coats are still present. They will naturally grow thicker fur to handle colder climate, which we have during the December event! Especially in zoos lions have been observed to grow a fur coat against the cold during winter, here are some examples. Both males and females can grow winter coats, altho males tend to just grow a thicker mane. Instead of just long grown this fur coat is very dense and thick, similar to the winter coat of mountain lions. It’s very visible around their chest/belly, face and leg region. Here is a try on how that could look Ignore for now, I'm working on redrawing my idea! Wouldn't mind seeing other peoples interpretation on how this mutation could look, someone else can probably do a better job at it than me. My idea for the mutation: - Names for the mutation could either be "Winter Coat", "Winter Fur" or "Winter Pelt" (Personally I like Winter Pelt) - This mutation would be a rare, random mutation that can only be breed during December, but can pass outside of December - It can appear on both genders - It is visible from birth - It has a small chance to pass naturally from either parents Now the savannah is no place for a thick coated lion, so I’d imagine there could be some kind of penalty (outside of December). Females could have a disadvantage on their hunting successes and I like @Vinn's suggestion to add a %penalty on males and females stamina stat. What do you think? Let me know! |

New idea: I want to lean a little bit more into the idea of this mutation being a "pseudo snow leopard hybrid", so what If every cub being born with the Winter Coat mutation would have a small chance of spawning with a new Rosette that is based on Snow Leopards? Edit: Alright, maybe not. Still, I want to suggest a new random breedable (NON HYBRID T4) Rosette along side this mutation Devs can decide to release with it, or not. Something more subtle based on Snow Leopards rosettes, that doesn't cover as much as other Hybrid rosettes we had before. 0 players like this post! Like? Hey, I know you said you were working on a drawing for this, but I couldn't resist creating a mockup after reading this thread :3 I only made a female version because I couldn't decide what the male version should look like. Should the mane base remain the same and only the body base be changed? I think it might be neat for the mutation to cause a forced mane shape of "Thick" and for the art to have a custom look. But maybe others wouldn't like that since it removes an important customization option for kings. Reception might be heavily dependent on how appealing the custom mane art is, and how easy it is to make custom decor manes to fit over it. I think the psuedo hybrid idea is a bit much. Probably better to stick with the original idea of a fluffy mutation for both sexes, adding a special marking to go with it would take a lot of extra art & coding. Plus it doesn't make much sense for the concept, as you said in the original post irl lions grow winter coats on their own, it doesn't change their markings or indicate hybridization. Your original idea was pretty solid and I could see it being added eventually. Mixing it up with hybrids on the other hand, is going to be a hard sell. Other than that I agree with most of this suggestion. Maybe instead of a permanent thirst meter, which would require more coding than any other existing mutation, winter coat lions could receive a severe penalty to the stamina stat. Up to 75%, maybe? 0 players like this post! Like? |

i like it the idea, but i don't think they need a penalty. if we have primals, space lions, colorful lions, etc i don't think the mutation needs to be to realistic 0 players like this post! Like? |

I love it!!!!!!! I think it should be passable from both males and females, with males being able to be kinged. I also think that the penalty to stamina is a good decision. A little bit of flavour text would be fun too! If born during December: One of your lionesses noticed that CUB was born with a dense coat. They seem much more comfortable in the cold, snuh filled weather than their siblings. Huh. If passed outside of December: One of your lionesses noticed that CUB was born with a dense coat. The poor thing seems pretty uncomfortable in the heat of the savannah. 0 players like this post! Like? |
