Hello! I just recently decided to start a breeding project! I’ve got the design that I want to breed for but I’m a little lost at where to really start. I’ve started getting lions with the markings I need and I get the overall gist of things but not so much the fine details.
I’ll give you a little information on what I’m shooting for so I can get the best help possible.

I’m breeding a Sahara based lion. I’m hoping to make it full BO, down to even the skin. 10 BO markings. I understand that this will be very expensive and difficult for me to achieve (especially because only like 1-2 markings have over 500 alive lions on site and even less of those have active members.

What I’m mostly interested in is where to begin? Do I breed markings first then move onto eyes, base, mane, etc. like what order should I do this in? What worked best for you?

I would also love to know anything else I might not know about. Everything I’ve said is pretty much about all I know lol.

I personally found it easier to start with the base and slowly add on to that. Have a king with the base and breed to ladies with the marks in hopes that the base passes with some of the markings. The mane color should be easiest. Once all your ladies have the same mane color as the eking they will only pass that mane color! I would grab some lions with the skin and eyes you want, but dont use the salt items just yet(it adds up quickly)! Let them pass naturally until you are further down the line, then use the salts. It would left a lot to have the base, eyes, mane color, mane shape, and skin on the stud! Depending on RNG it will be a slow process but chip away at building the king up and keep kinging cubs that has more traits than what you have now!

Also if you want it to be faster, inbreeding may help. If not you might spend some extra cash on repping the king to keep everything clean.

My project has evolved over a couple years, and I've actually lost interest in my current one LOL - but I did get pretty far! Ultimately I wanted a Bandit base with Daisy eyes and Tsavo Briar mane (then BO skins were added, so I put Quail skin on the list), and both hybrid-exclusive mottled markings. Not picky on the other 8 marking slots,

I started with the base and then moved onto the eyes and mane, then got the skin, then mottled rosette. Next step was to get mottled stripes on, but alas, spending hundreds of GB on duds took its toll :P

Personally, I feel that a good way you can start is to breed and king a lion with the eyes, mane, and skin right away. Then start breeding as many markings onto a cub as you can. You can wait on the base, I think, as Sahara groupies are pretty common (iirc) for people to find in May, so they aren't super expensive. Store up a ton of project marked lionesses to breed, and if you breed a Sahara with the required eyes, skin, and mane before your guy retires, king it. Even if it doesn't have any markings. You'll hopefully have a bunch of lionesses with the markings, so eventually you'll get lucky and have a better Sahara born to king. Then just keep going!

As a note - the way special bases pass is at a fixed rate:
Special x Special = 4%
Special x Rare/Uncommon = 2%
Special x Common = 1%

Be mindful that Special x Special is still a 2% per special, but if you use, say, Sahara x Ancestral, it's a 50/50 shot as to which one passes. However, if you do Sahara x Elysian (or any combo base) Sahara also gets the 2% special rate from the combo, as the combo cannot naturally pass without a factor. If that makes sense.
News post for reference
