I've been in rlc breeding for a year now, but I don't understand the reason of keeping certain lines private.

this is in no meaning meant to be offensive, rude or anything towards to who do have a private line

So I've heard one reason, "to keep the line rare"
Which, I understand, but in my point of view you're "wasting" crunchies you're cloning a lion you won't sell, might aswell try cloning a random ncl then.

I've tried thinking of keeping lines private, but I can't think of anything, keeping it private won't get you any profit and many players might want it, and will pay lots for a heat or clone.
I know the game isn't all about profit and mostly just fun and such, but why keep a line away from other players?

Once again, this is not meant to be rude or anything, I'm just confused and try to view it from a different perspective. It's totally up to the rl owner what they want to do with their rl line and I totally respect that!

Some people just get really attached to a line and wouldn't like to see it in other people's hands. They can't stop anyone from reassembling the premade assets themselves in a breeding project, but they can conserve their own lions, at least.

I think some other people might just like the power of keeping an expensive valuable lion to themselves, lol. But that's their right, of course—it's just a game and that's just a collection of PNGs at the end of the day.

I know that some people start to see their lions as their own OCs, which is of course awesome too, so that'd add to the possessiveness, same as the first thing.

RLs are just cool too. They're pretty much ready-made BO heirs. Shiny. Neat. If you paid a lot for something, it feels reasonable to want to keep it close and enjoy it for awhile. I spent almost 3 years breeding my heir and now I'm still weirdly protective over my pixel lion lol

I'm not really on either side of the fight, mind. People can do whatever they want with the lions they own, and that goes for everyone. These are just my thoughts.

The reason why I'd personally keep a line semi private is because people ruin lines. Once a line gets over 100+ clones, the og rl's g2 clones go for around only 200 gb. That's insanely low for an rlc, especially a g2. People do not want to pay more for a widespread line that they can get any time.

Because of this, that means all the effort & money the og owner spent into the actual rl and trying to spread her line will all go to waste. Heats fail most of the time, and getting a clone is very hard. The owner would wanna make money somehow, right? And that's by selling the clones.

An example of this would be the ogdoad & vitiligo ebony rlc. The lines are so widespread that it's so hard to find people who want a clone, let alone a heat because they fail most of the time. It'd be extremely hard to find profit, and it's just money wasted.

As for keeping a line completely private, most cases it's usually only for a period of time. Not permanent. I know a few people who've kept their lines private because that want around 4-8 clones for themself before selling g4+ clones to the public.

A completely private line brings an insane amount of profit, however I'm pretty sure most people don't keep their lines private because 1. It's a lot of work to even be able to make profit in the future and 2. Lines die out easily because of this.

So yeah! That's just my opinion though, never own an rl.

Yeah, but not all public lines get over 100 clones right? I understand this could be a valid argument, but so many lines are made public, and I feel like, atleast when I started with rlc's myself that those cheap lines are the best, because they're cheap it's a good way to start, but this could be an original expierence.

But yeah I have seen some others say they won't sell clones until they got themself multiple and when they sell it'll be only (example) G3+

But the keeping it private for ever just made no sense to me, except the reason of Leon, with the protecting reason

My g2 smog rlc with onky one heat used, extremely young, was estimated to not ever be able to sell for more than 250 gb. That's insanely low, and there's less than 50 clones I believe.

It doesn't need 100 clones, it just needs ti be well known enough for the price to plumet ig.

But yeah, private lines don't make sense to me either, the reason I want a private line is to watch it die put and see how the other owners felt when an rl line died because of them.

Sadly looks also matter, I think youre talking about the brown smog RLC, I also wouldn't pay to much for that line, its pretty but there are better lines despite the low gen. Looks, demand, gen and amount of clones are a huge factor, not just the amount of living clones.
My Sahara rlc (5th Jan 2024) I can sell heats for up to 80gb, with 20+ living clones, my Ebony RLC (Jan 2024) someone is (or was) selling heats for 40gb, with at that moment only 13-ish living clones.

Yeah I cant do anything nor force owners but I hate to see a line die, or become inactive simply because the owner kept it private or put a claim on the RL and never came online again. I LOVE the fact that lioden is working on a solution, Im not sure what the most known, or wanted plans are, but Im a HUGE fan of making sure the winner of a RL has to come online to claim her, to many lines are lost because of that, and then I rather have that line be private with hopes of it coming public later (or with longer gens only) than be on an inactive account.

Personally I have to agree with you, and while what the others said is true, it is ultimately sad to see a line die completely at the hands of either the OG RL winner or someone who bought it from them. I can understand keeping it private for a time to amass their own clones, king it, etc and THEN spread to others, but having a totally private line that makes no profit and just sits there is a bit sad when viewed from the outside. To me, the whole point of everyone having a chance to win this RL is to then get it out the community, and yes, someone could RMA project one up, but imagine the backlash they would get for doing so. Personally, I own 20+ lines, and every clone I get goes to the community because not everyone has the items/time/money to clone them and own them themselves or to even get started. We all have to start somewhere!

And in regards to clones costing less eventually, some just don't have the looks people are looking for to stay profitable (think brown clones that look like NCLs) OR it's just been too long for them to be popular anymore. However, the RA clone with 100+ clones is till going strong (even tho I think that's insane... not a big fan of it tbh) so the popularity of it doesn't really matter for pricing as long as people continue pricing it high on TC xD

In the end though it is their lion, we can agree or disagree with someone's decision on it but that changes nothing We just gotta deal with it

I think this is getting a little too confusing, 50+ clones isn’t considered “rare”. Take the witch line for example that has around 35-40 clones, I recently sold one for 400 value. Appearance really comes into play when it comes to valuing lines with colorful or visually pleasing palettes.

A line with 25 clones but a very neutral palette will be valued less due to demand purely because the lack of unique design aspects. Very specific clone collectors want neutral lions, and may not have the funds to spend excessive amounts on them.

Private lines being made public can go either way- insane value spike or very little interest depending on how long it’s been since the raffle ran and how unique the features are compared to past rls. One that looks similar to a past one won’t be as desired as say, the recent aether clone.

New combo bases and BO features on rls being gate-kept in my opinion is useless, as eventually these traits will be in the general lion pool.

Reasons to keep them private in my opinion is it’s a very easy way to deter constant messages about heats and clone sales. Even if the intention is never to keep it private, stating it is on the rl makes people less interested as they just consider it never a possibility.

If you’re interested in a specific private line, i recommend keeping tabs on the existing clones and rl to see if someone posts a heat for sale.

Rl winners are also significantly less likely to keep lines private, simply because they can majorly profit off heat sales from the 50 sb entry. Whereas people buying clones need more of a head start to gain a profit and may keep several clones before considering selling them. They also may keep it private simply because of the amount of work put into saving up for one. When you win one, realistically that’s not a lot of work and immediate profit. When you buy one, that’s a lot of work with several clones before profit. Especially considering a rl may throw a clone 3 times in natural heats.

If a rl has 6 heats and passes once, that's only 1 clone in potentially 4 months. (Without barks obviously) that one clone also might not pass the first few heats and that’s months without clones added to the count. If your raffle lioness only passes once or twice you’re going to want to keep those clones for yourself 🤷‍♀️ however offering barked heats increases clones.

As a whole, the idea of selling a g2 or g3 clone for 700 gb is nice in theory, but is unrealistic unless it’s a desired line. And not every clone is desired.
