7/2/2018 - Nix awoke with a yawn.
She was lying on the chocolate paws of Firefly, a curious lioness who was far more playful than Kerberos. Nix peered up at her green eyes and smiled. "Good morning!"
"It's afternoon, Nix. All you did was take a nap!" Firefly laughed, licking the cub's head.
Nix stuck out her tongue. "Close enough!"
"Well, it's a beautiful afternoon. Wanna go out and play since your mommy and sister are still sleeping?" Firefly offered.
Nix didn't even think, nodding excitedly. She loved playing with Firefly! "Yes please!!"
The two padded out of the den. The territory was a lush green paradise now thanks to the wet season. The grass was soft and moist under Nix's paws.
She looked at Firefly and smiled. The chocolate lioness had been caring for her since the moment she was born, alongside Kerberos, of course.
"Firefly?" Nix asked, blue eyes twinkling.
"Yeah Nix?" Firefly responded.
"Can I call you mama?"
Firefly blinked for a moment. She knew the cub liked her, but to actually view her as a second mother? That was a lot, even if she did help to care for the cub. Still, she wasn't opposed to the idea.
Hesitantly, she nodded. "That's fine with me, Nixy."
Nix bounced over to Firefly and snuggled up against the lioness. "Thanks, mama."
"Anytime, Nix..."
7/5/2018 - Finding a quiet spot, Nix stalked a small gecko she had never seen before and was curious about what it would taste like. +2% training experience!
7/6/2018 - Nix got halfway up the tree before she paused and began to ask you about the shadowy place. +7% training experience!
7/9/2018 - Nix ran after a butterfly, determined to catch it to see how they taste. +3% training experience!
7/11/2018 - Nix wrestled with their pridemate while asking them what their plans were for later today. +2% training experience!
7/13/2018 - Shaking her butt vigorously, Nix pounced on an ant and squashed it to see how it looked. Ew. +2% training experience!
7/14/2018 - 1 year old!
7/17/2018 - Nix spent a lot of time with her mama. Her mama led the hunting party she trained with, and was the more playful of her parents. Nix was a boundless soul with lots of energy; she took after Firefly in that sense. So she spent a lot of her time with the chocolate lioness, sparring and practicing her technique. If she wasn't with her sister, she was with her mama.
But tonight, it was just her and her mom under the stars. Indeed, Kerberos had asked her daughter if she'd like to spend some time together. Nix considered it carefully; she knew how quiet and relaxed her mom was, much like Styx. But she rarely saw the lioness outside of hunting, and she smiled.
"I'd love that."
They walked for quite a while, chattering about nothing in particular. Their days, what they'd had for lunch. Small talk, a mother's attempt to connect with her daughter despite their very different personalities.
"You know, I think nurture wins," Kerberos commented absentmindedly.
"Why do you think that?" Nix asked as she walked.
"You are just like Firefly despite my blood. Maybe nature doesn't matter as much as lions think," Kerberos chuckled in reply.
Nix smiled. Her mom always thought a lot, about all kinds of things. Kerberos and Styx had always been dreamers, lost in the stars, the flowers, their own thoughts. Firefly and herself, on the other hand, were doers. Always busy, always running. They loved to be active and learn new things by seeing where their paws led them.
Maybe that's why Firefly and Kerberos fit together so well; exact opposites, made to compliment each other perfectly.
Kerberos sat down now and sighed. Her eyes were closed as she let the chilled air of the rainy season night blow through her penumbra fur. Nix sat down beside her, copying her stance. Kerberos opened her eyes.
"When was the last time you looked at the stars?" Kerberos asked.
Nix shook her head. "I don't know, to be honest. Have I missed something important?"
"Maybe," Kerberos started. "Or maybe not."
Nix frowned. That wasn't a real answer.
"Regardless, though, you won't miss this."
Nix followed her mom's gaze with awe. There was a meteor shower tonight. They raced across the skies, glittering and sparkling as they flew. They left a burning trail behind them, like fiery footprints on blackened ground. It was stunning to watch.
