Hello! After reading through all of the information about this I could find, I do have one question:

The FAQ section mentions that I can buy NCLs and raffle lionesses from other plays, but the sales thread says that both NCLs and second gen lions can be offered there. My question is, how do second gen lions fit into all of this? Can I buy them to add to my breeding project?

Also, I think I've figured out the design I want for my king: link. I think I'd like to breed for red bases with some kinds of spotted markings and green eyes, though I haven't figured out much beyond that yet.

The bottom line rule is that any lion in your pride must be heritageless or decended only from heritageless lions or from within your own pride.
So according to that, you can buy and use a Gen 2 cub/lion because that would be a "lion in your pride that only has heritageless parents (no grandparents) in their heritage".

But any lion with more heritage than that would not qualify. (so for example you cannot use a Gen 2 stud because that would result in the cubs being Gen 3 -with grandparents- from heritage outside of your pride)
