So I really love primals of all variations, and having 3 different types, including some super unique poses is amazing, but I really want more! I was researching canine evolution a while back and stumbled upon the American cave lion, or Panthera Leo Atrox. Well, I think they'd make a pretty kickass primal, so I sketched one. It's probably not super accurate to the actual Atrox skeletons, but I tried. (I'm also not amazing at felines but again... I tried!) Adult male Adult female I can do more if people are interested?! |

I really love the drawings and I love American Lions, but I found some arguments between whether an American Lion was really related to Lions, or more related to Jaguars (or Tigers as well, but mostly Jaguars). "In a comprehensive analysis of 23 skull dimensions, Panthera atrox emerged as quite distinct from lion, tiger, and jaguar. A separate study of the evolutionary history of pantherine cats by Christiansen placed the “American lion” closest to the jaguar (Panthera onca)." "The work by Christiansen and Harris makes a compelling case that Panthera atrox was, in fact, a kind of giant jaguar rather than a lion. There exists no evidence now that true lions ever immigrated to the Americas." 0 players like this post! Like? |

Actually, there is some confusion regarding this. Preserved skin remains found with skeletal material thought to be from the American lion in caves in Argentina indicate that the animal was reddish in color. Cave paintings from in El Ceibo in the province of Santa Cruz seem to confirm this, and reduce the possibility of confusion with fossil jaguars, as similar cave paintings show the latter cat accurately as being yellow in color. It was generally not found in the same areas as the jaguar, which favored forests over open habitats. However, the fossil remains found in the tar pits of Talara, Peru actually belong to an unusually large jaguar. On the other hand, fossils of a large felid from late Pleistocene localities in southern Chile and Argentina traditionally identified as an extinct subspecies of jaguar, Panthera onca mesembrina, have been reported to be remains of the American lion. It was proposed that it arose from pantherines that migrated to North America during the mid-Pleistocene and gave rise to American lions and jaguars (Panthera onca). 0 players like this post! Like? |

Ye I know about the confusion, I did the research. I found multiple articles either saying they're giant jaguars, they're lions, or just other stuff about the species. These things are so interesting to learn, but there's so much debate over it sadly. Just wanna learn about a species without going through articles of debate. 0 players like this post! Like? |

I think evidence points to them being Lions. Yes, there is a controversy. However, mitochondrial DNA sequence data from fossil remains suggests that the American lion (P. l. atrox) represents a sister lineage to the Eurasian cave lion (P. l. spelaea), and likely arose when an early cave lion population became isolated south of the North American continental ice sheet about 340,000 years ago. However, a new ancient DNA study (Barnett et al. 2009) indicates that P. atrox was closely related to both the cave lion (Panthera spelaea) and the modern lion (Panthera leo) and suggests that they were less closely related to jaguars. 0 players like this post! Once again, these things are very interesting. How a certain structure of a creature can lead people to believe it is related to a certain other animal. Or how animals can have things within them that at first seem pointless, but actually have a purpose (ex: whale/dolphin pelvic bones). Evolution was my favorite to learn in school, and I wish I can take Biology again just for it. 0 players like this post! Like? |

The only thing that makes me more excited than Halloween is when new primals get added, TBH. 0 players like this post! Like? |
