September 9, 2023: beep boop this thread needs to be cleaned up and the rules modified to reflect the current game. I’ve started the Liolocke and am tracking everything in my notes, going to work on getting this thread, the progress thread, and the lore thread up and running this weekend!

Everything below the squiggles is from January 2022 atm :)

Objectives for current game:

- Survive long enough to figure out what’s going on
- Breed a 200 stat cub
- Reach level 20
- idk figure out a beetle battle goal
- ???? Figure something else out lol

Lore thread

Progress thread

~~~
Hello!
I can't be bothered to format this post right now to be all pretty since this is the first time I've logged in in like, two years, lol. I'll come back and make this look all nice and shiny later, promise. This is mostly for my own benefit because I need a place to write down all my goals.
Anyway, this thread will be used as a general discussion and planning thread for my Liolocke, a Lioden Nuzlocke I attempted at the start of 2020, but well, we all know what 2020 was like. I thought about Lioden out of the blue about a week ago, and thought it would be fun to attempt the Liolocke again. However, I also knew there was no way I could jump into such a big commitment with about a week to prepare.
So, as a result, I will not be attempting the year long Liolocke in 2022.
But I WILL be preparing to attempt it in 2023!
You can find the original Disscussion thread here, the original Lore thread here, and the original Progress thread here.
My current thought is to give myself three months of no rules, then in April attempt a 1-month long Liolocke with a short, contained storyline, then go back to relaxed play afterwards. Then, during August-September, I'll up the stakes and try a 2-month long Liolocke with another storyline, then give myself another three month break and prepare to attempt the 1-year long Liolocke in 2023. The goal during these breaks will be to A, save up extra funds to be used for any rerolls I may have to do if I fail and B, practice following the rules of the Liolocke without having to worry about the punishments if I fail. The reason for this is that I made all these rules without really knowing if these things were even possible. Is such a brutal challenge even viable? Can I even make it work? What are my goals going to be for the big challenge? Are they feasible within the rule set?
This is also the reason for the short-duration Liolockes: they are basically practice. They are short so if things don't go well and I'm not happy with the way the game is going (if I don't find it fun, which is kind of the whole point, I'm not going to do something I don't enjoy just because it's difficult, this is a game) it will be over soon and I can take what I learned to make changes.
And who knows! Maybe I'll feel confident and ready to try a Liolocke in March, or in February! The point of this year is specifically to NOT hold myself to any strict rules, to relax and test the waters without feeling like I have some strict game rules to uphold. The whole point of this year is to PRACTICE and finetune the criteria for the Liolocke so that way I can feel comfortable and confident by the time it actually comes around, and the strict rules feel like a fun challenge, rather than something I end up dreading. (Also, time to just collect some pretty lions and decorate them and have fun like normal! I haven't played in ages after all, lol.)
So that's basically it, this thread is being posted so that way I have a place to organize my thoughts and so if anyone who happens to stumble across it has some suggestions they have a place to do so. I'll go ahead and copy the original rule list to this post. Time to re-familiarize myself with the site and just get back into the swing of things. :)
Rules:
1. I start the Liolocke with nothing. No currency, no items, no lions.
1a. Any items that I have on my side may be used on Non-Liolocke lions.
1b. The Non-Liolocke lions which I will start the game with will be non-participatory in pride upkeep. They exist either to be pretty or are me using my main as storage space for my side.
1c. Non-Liolocke lions are consequently exempt from all rules unless the actions taken may interfere with the Liolocke.
1d. Any event currency which I obtained in the past and rolls over into the Liolocke’s duration shall be transferred to my side/ignored as if it does not exist in the case of piety which is non-transferable.
2. I treat my territory as though it is unexpanded and must be ‘manually’ expanded. I begin the Liolocke with 0 submale slots and a territory size of 2.
2a. Because this is not a new account and my territory has already been expanded, in order to ‘expand’ my territory I will transfer the currency which would have been used to expand my territory to my side and will then have access to the extra territory which I ‘purchased’.
2b. When I reach the point of ‘fighting’ for additional territory, this will be handled by winning a fight against an NPC lion encounter in Explore.
2c. Territory expansions purchased with GB will also be handled by transferring the currency and then obtaining ‘access’ to the spot.
2d. Once I have ‘purchased’ territory up to my actual territory size, I will then proceed with expansions as per the usual game mechanics.
2e. Submale slots, frozen slots, and cave slots will be handled in the same fashion. Previously obtained slots will be ‘purchased’ by transferring the currency which will then enable me to use the slots.
2f. Once I have ‘purchased’ slots up to my actual slot count, I will then proceed with expansions as per the usual game mechanics.
2g. Any territory, submale slots, frozen slots, or cave slots that are taken up by Non-Liolocke lions will be treated as if they do not exist.
3. I do not purchase anything from other players. This includes raffles, items, and lions.
3a. Gold Beetles are the one exception to this. Without purchasing them off other players the only way to obtain them is with real cash and I am not looking to invest real money into this challenge.
3b. I can purchase whatever I want for use on my Non-Liolocke lions.
4. Upon entering a new zone for the first time, I may attempt to claim the first lioness I encounter. I may not attempt to claim another lioness in the same zone, regardless of outcome.
4a. If a lioness fails a hunt, she is critically wounded in the hunt and must roll death saves; if she passes two out of three she recovers and lives, if she fails two out of three she dies.
4b. The dead lioness must be chased or transferred to Non-Liolocke status; any other options would affect karma or currency.
4c. Every level, the lioness gets a freebie failure, in that she can fail a hunt and not be critically wounded.
- 4ca. If a lioness passes all three death saves she is allocated an extra freebie.
4d. If it is a hunting party that fails, one lioness is chosen at random to have been wounded in the hunt.
5. If my king is defeated in explore, he is critically wounded and must roll death saves; if he passes two out of three he recovers and lives, if he fails two out of three he dies.
5a. Every level, my king gets a freebie failure, in that he can lose a battle and not be critically wounded.
- 5aa. If my king passes all three death saves he is allocated an extra freebie.
5b. If available, submales will protect my king and take the critical wound instead, and must then roll their own death saves; if he passes two out of three he recovers and lives, if he fails two out of three he dies.
5c. The dead submale must be chased or transferred to Non-Liolocke status; any other options would affect karma or currency.
5d. If my king fails his death saves a male adolescent must be kinged in his stead to continue the pride.
- 5da. Cubs may not be kinged.
- 5db. If there are no available heirs the pride is disbanded and the game is over.
6. I cannot spar with other lions.
7. I cannot spar with submales.
8. When a lioness births cubs, a coin is flipped for every cub. If the coin lands on heads, the cub survives. If the coin lands on tails, the cub dies.
8a. The dead cub may be killed, chased off, sent to the reserve, or gifted. They may not be sold.
9. I can train my cubs.
9a. I can train my adolescents as well.
10. I can sell items and living lions.
11. I cannot accept donations or gifts.
11a. If the gift is part of a site event, such as in December, I can accept it.
11b. Any gifts otherwise can only be put towards Non-Liolocke lions.
12. I can participate in site events.
12a. Any event currency remaining from previous years must be treated as if it does not exist.
12b. I can use previous years event currency if I am purchasing something for Non-Liolocke lions.
13. I cannot attempt to impress the Special Lioness.
14. I cannot do Snake Quests.
15. I cannot participate in Beetle Battles.
16. I can do quests for the Gorilla Enclave, but I must have the cubs myself.
16a. I can only accept energy bonuses from the Gorilla Enclave if a quest is completed.
17. I cannot take items from the Giving Tree.
18. I cannot play in the Games section for rewards.
Have decided to crb her once I save up for another gb, will let me breed her again MUCH faster than if I wait for her to birth and be breedable again naturally
This is actually a good idea I think I’ll try to keep some crbs on hand for cases like this where the whole litter is getting executed by the state, makes it more convenient lol. And if I can get enough gb for an eye changer by the time she’s in heat again I can give her her planned eye color too, might also/alternatively be able to remove her brown debris which I wanna get rid of before breeding again which would be cool
(its an accidental miscarriage lore-wise and she’s gonna have some trauma im just forcing it so i dont have to wait two whole ass weeks to try again since the whole litter was executed by the will of the coin flip asdfghjkl)
if she somehow ends up with a lethal im gonna laugh lol
It was... nice here, he supposed.
Of course, Auru had seen many places in his life, as short as it had been. His parents had never known the meaning of settling down, of having a home, so Auru had seen everything a wolfdog could imagine, and then some.
He had seen the ocean, even managed to use the fact that he was a pup to beg a snack from a human, and had gotten to play in the waves while his parents went looking for any beached creatures to make a meal of.
He had once seen a forest that never seemed to cease to rain, and he had climbed mountains taller than his own imagination. The sheer fact that his parents never settled down, that walking was their favorite activity, day in and day out, they kept traveling, kept exploring, had shown him so many wonders in this world.
But he had never seen a desert.
Not until now.
And he never wanted to see it again.
He had all but collapsed when he came to the oasis a few days ago, all but falling into the water with the bottom half of his muzzle under the surface and drinking without bothering to get up. Once he had filled his belly with water, he slunk into the liquid, letting it wash over him and soothe his sand-filled fur.
Never.
Again.
No, it wasn't happening.
He may have grown up a nomad, but he would live here forever. He would never leave, not when leaving meant going back out into that hellscape.
He had made something of a nest for the past few days, buried beneath ferns and overhanging canopies as he flattened the small plant life near him, scraping a small hollow in the soil to curl up in and rest his head.
The water was plentiful, and the fish abundant. The scenery was lovely and such a blessing after the hell that was the desert outside. Why would he ever want to leave?
It was... nice here.
Auru Geniven was fast asleep in his makeshift nest when the others arrived, and far too deep in his dreams for their presence to awaken him. By some stroke of luck, he had not been stumbled upon yet, and remained quite unconscious as the other men got settled in, until after several hours, he began to slowly rouse from his repose, his rest finished for the time, and his body deciding it was time to wake up.
The man rolled onto his belly with a great yawn, stretching his paws before him and smacking his lips almost contemplatively as he observed his surroundings with sleepy blinks. He was still too asleep to even notice the fact that the scent of other wolves was fresher now, as opposed to the old, faded scents he had picked up when he first came here.
A dryness in his mouth bid him to rise, and he slowly staggered to his feet before dropping into another stretch, popping his back before straightening and stretching his hind legs behind him in turn. A shake later to loosen his fur from the rumpled stiffness of sleep, and he slowly began padding in the direction of water.
It was only a few minutes of walking before his head poked out of the ferns, the sound of the waterfall drawing him as he emerged near one of the banks of the pool, ready to take a step further towards the water when a flash of white in the corner of his vision caught his eye, and he paused mid-step, looking up.
Oh...
There was... someone here...
His nose twitched softly as he scented the air. Oh, so that was a wolf. He was not hallucinating, that was indeed a wolf. He had just been so bleary that he had yet to notice.
Auru was noticing now.
He quickly stumbled back a few paces, bumping into a tree that caused him to jump with fright before sidestepping and backing up so he was half in the underbrush once more. His heart beat a tumultuous pattern against his ribcage, and he lowered his head, ears wilted as he dared a small glance at the other male, before looking down once more and his jaws working uselessly for half a moment before words managed to stumble out in a shaky voice.
"I-I-I'm s-so sorry... d-do you l-l-live here? I-I-I thought th-this place w-was u-u-uncl-claimed I-I-I was just r-resting I-I'm sorry."
There seemed to be all but no coherence or pauses in the words, all of them spilling forth like one great rush of water after the breaking of a dam as he stuttered at the other, much larger, man.
He hadn't realized someone lived here. But he should have known an oasis like this being unclaimed was too good to be true.
yknow its interesting how their tables wound up changing, kara's gets paler while eliein's gets darker
tbf, the bg i used for eliein's first table was chosen deliberately to match a similar color scheme as her second one, since i have her future plans done and her current bg in-game is just the wild waterhole one like everyone else's (save ilocke's) will be for now
but i also wasn't initially intending for that bg SPECIFICALLY, i was just looking for something with similar enough colors to vibe as being a table for the same character just at a different point in her life, so idk its just interesting how one table got paler as it went into the 'future' and the other got more saturated, idk if that says anything about how their characters are going to develop or not but its just kinda interesting lol
also yes, as you might be able to inference from the way their 'future' tables differ from their 'current' ones, things are going to get more intense as secrets are revealed and antagonists show themselves lol (i have some general plans for the storyline but it is also being very much driven by whatever happens in-game!)
okay i've come up with a way to stay true to my challenge while ALSO having the designs i want bc hey, this is completely self-imposed and it's not like the game (lioden itself) is in any way actually STOPPING me from having the lions i want. so - once they 'die' in challenge or actually die if i keep them alive to old age - i'll just freeze them/store-revive-freeze and then pretty them up for sentimental value <3
right now i already have 5 frozen lions, BUT, as far as the challenge is concerned, i have a free frozen slot. i can sell anything and do whatever i want so long as it doesn't affect the challenge, so i can do whatever i want to earn the 25gb i need to ACTUALLY expand to another empty frozen slot so long as it doesn't have any impact on my king or liolocke lions.
right now i've already been working towards playing in the games section for monetary/item rewards (i.e. still no baoball bc that would affect the challenge lol) and selling the items, AND instead of donating whatever i get from beetle battles i'm stockpiling it to sell later. i'm thinking about snagging some cheapie lionesses/a submale off the TC to start mass hunting for prey to sell and patrolling for whatever bits and bobs i can find, and putting that income towards the gb i need to ACTUALLY get another frozen slot. i could also do this continually for future slots so long as i earn the 5/10/15gb needed in the 'challenge's eyes within the scope of the challenge, i can do whatever i want to fund the other 25gb i'll need on top of that.
not sure how i feel about having lionesses and submales yet, but i'll keep thinking on it, for now at least i'm getting funds from the game section and sales and in the past 60 hours i've almost gotten to 5gb so i'm making good headway!
i'm hoping i can still scrape through within the scope of the challenge either way tho, i'm mostly worried about not being able to get enough locust wings to get kara both her base and marking, currently have 29 and need 75 total. but i'm stockpiling red bulls for when wet season hits (and there's more encounters) and refraining from leveling up so i can get the free energy boost(s)! so, crossing fingies, but either way i still want to freeze them for sentiment i think so overall i think i've got a solid plan that doesn't interfere with the challenge, cause kara and eliein are special to me already :) <3
workin on the next lore update but i think i'm gonna have to actually edit this one. cause it's from kara's pov and rn she just sounds like ilocke, she needs her own voice. cause my 3rd person pov segments have been fine but the moment i swap to 1st person i'm writing like ilocke, whom kara very much is Not lol
bit tricky in that regard, just bc i don't have a feel for her voice yet, but i'll get there <3
me somehow having the audacity to be surprised when im at low health in a battle, tell myself i need to leave the battle and not attack because im going to lose, and then when i attack anyway i end up losing
the key to this challenge is that if you hear a little voice in the back of your head saying 'you can win this battle, take the risk' that is the devil speaking, do not listen
(ironically i was fighting beelzebub so damn he really did get me there smh)
No one wants to know how many sb I’ve spent on the random herb purchases trying to get enough umganu to make a red lace. Especially not me.
(It’s only even going to be at 30% opacity the things I’m doing for this challenge I stg lol. Well never let it be said I’m short on herbs lol)
