before i kick this off, i want to say i have scoliosis, and would have likely died if i hadn’t received my surgery. i have also read about people who had scoliosis much worse than i did, and nearly did die. i have also checked to see if it was suggested before, and i found MAYBE two posts from a while ago mentioning it
edit: and as #313347 said, it would help give this game a bit more representation for people like myself who have scoliosis and love lions and lioden!
SO, WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?
scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, usually in an “S” or “C” shape. it commonly occurs in humans but can occur in other animals, such as dogs, horses, rats, fish, snakes or house cats (closest to our beloved lions). therefore, it could likely occur in lions, but i don’t think any cases have been documented. at least i couldn’t find any
IS SCOLIOSIS EVEN A MUTATION?
simply googling this question reveals it is genetic and hereditary, which causes me to believe it is a mutation. not 100% sure, but let’s say yes
edit: as #313347 stated, anything different genetically can be considered a mutation! eye colors etc
SO HOW WOULD IT SHOW IN LIODEN?
currently, deaf is the only lethal that doesn’t have a 100% chance to kill your lion during the cub stage. i think scoliosis would kill when your lion turns 2, due to being unable to breathe due to their spine and ribs squeezing their lungs. the cubs could look normal, but i think it would start to show in adolescence. if you used the falcon’s eye to check for a mutation in a seemingly normal cub, it would say it has scoliosis, but it still wouldn’t be visible until adolescence, much like how scoliosis can be caught early.
if you don’t support, please tell me why! and if you have any ideas or constructive criticism, please feel free to share! i would love to see this in lioden :)

I also have scoliosis. I think this is a great idea, but I have a couple of suggestions that could build on it (kinda like what Vinny Claws said):

- A fatal version, as suggested, which gets progressively worse. Nothing to add here except that there's at least one captive lion with scoliosis that seems to be a product of inbreeding, so it definitely can occur in lions.

- A nonfatal version, which gives you occasional notifications about your lion having difficulty/pain in daily life starting in adolescence, but is an invisible mutation with no artwork change (representative of invisible disabilities/chronic pain that is not disabling but is still shitty to live with). This version might shorten your lion's lifespan but would not prevent them from reaching adulthood and breeding. (I feel like maybe capping them at 14 years would be reasonable, to represent the increasing problems they'd have with arthritis, hunting injuries, etc. as they got older.)

- If an artwork change was wanted with a nonfatal version, I'd suggest a crooked tail! It'd show that there was something off while still being subtle, and a crooked tail could even be a mutation on its own as well so that you'd have to check to see if it was benign or meant scoliosis.

- If people are interested, this might be a way to introduce more health problem mutations that wouldn't be fatal. I'm thinking of things like polydactyly, club foot, underbite, etc. that would prevent a lion from being an effective hunter or fighter but that would be survivable with the support of a pride.

Love this! 100% support! Oh and maybe as a death message or when they age to adol maybe it’s says “you look at [cub]’s spine while they lay down, it looks slightly curved, more curved than usual”

Support! I'm npt 100% sure whether or not my condition counts as scoliosis (I have a weak back and it's very difficult for me to keep it straight. I'm pretty much always slouching, and holding myself the way most people do makes it dofficult to draw proper breaths and it's painful) but I would love to see this in the game! Maybe it wouldn't be lethal, but I like the idea of the lower stats (prob strength, stamina, speed, and agility)

I also have a few flavor text ideas!

You approach [LION NAME] and hear them complaining about their back pains. Sounds like you'll be here for a while.

[LION NAME] seems sad after a pride member made fun of them for their crooked spine. You nuzzle them comfortingly, assuring them that nothing is wrong with them.

[LION NAME] comes up to you, whining about how they screwed up at a hunt today because their spine hurts.

Miuty, if that isn’t scoliosis, it sure sounds like it’s doing the same kind of thing!

Those flavor text examples inspired me to offer a few of my own:

- [LION NAME] gets up to greet you! They start to stretch, but wince and go stiff partway through, then carefully sit down again and let you come to them instead.

- You watch as [LION NAME] tries to tussle with a friend. Their misshapen, rigid spine makes it hard for them to counter their pridemate’s moves, but you’re proud to see them try so hard anyway. And their friend is being careful too. What a nice pair.

- You find [LION NAME] sitting alone under a tree. When you ask if something is wrong, they confess that their back and hips hurt a lot today. They gratefully accept your offer of help, and you spend a while kneading their sore muscles to help reduce the tension.
