HEAR ME OUT
Bleps look fine right? Like they aren't in pain and live pretty normal lives
But, if we are thinking realistically, they are probably not doing the best...
(Math class thoughts lol)

They are probably prone to a lot of bacteria and infection, their tongues are overgrown, not allowing their whole tongue to be in their mouths at once. It mostly hangs out of their mouth (as shown, duh)

So it gets a lot of outside air, were lots of bacteria can just, hop on. When they put it back in their mouths for a second, all that gets into their systems

If they get any cuts, stings, bites, things like that, it is almost sure to get infected, that's not good and probably hurts.
Their tongues would also probably get dried out, they cant keep it in their mouths for long, it's more of a quick slurp then done

It could also start to swell or If an infection got very bad, it could start to rot. This I would assume would imense amounts of pain, make the lions very sick, and probably stop the Lion from being able to eat

It could also get frostbite, also ouchies

And what if they got into a fight?
If their tongue gets caught in a claw or tooth, that's most likely gonna rip, bleed, and cause some pretty bad damage, also probably leading to infection

They also get all that yucky dust and dirt on it

They must bite their tongues while they eat, how do they eat?!
It could also be an issue with hunting, I know it doesn't seem like that but I mean, they have to worry about biting it or getting it stuck on smth

I could see overgrown tongues not being able to nurse or feed properly, many probably wouldn't make it to adulthood, or even Adolescent Hood due to malnutrition

If they do make it to adulthood, their tongues, or at least the outside part could grow tougher and more adapted to what it experiences

Uhmm...
Yeah!
Tell me your thoughts!

I believe certain big cats will basically lick the meat off of their prey, their tongues are much more rough than a normal cat's, meaning they can basically scrape the meat off with their tongue
Otherwise I agree with the infection and battle thing

So neither big cats nor their immune system are my field of expertise but for as for the infection part. As long as the tongue isn't injured and the protective outer layer is intact I don't think they'd be prone to more infection just for that.
Since the microorganism would still need to gain access to the right receptor/cell/nutrient etc. I give you that a dried out tongue would damage the mucus layer so eh may be.
Tho I agree it would most likely cause issues with feeding/nursing, grooming, swallowing maybe even vocalisation and respiration as i could imagine the larger tongue could cause obstructions under some circumstances.
On a note cats cool down with grooming themselves (at least our domestic friends) so that would might be something to consider too.

Love seeing ppl being invested with this type of stuff :)
Fun fact I thought about the how the fck do they eat just the other day lol

I actually think this was well thought out. I have been studying wild cats for a while now, and I actually agree with this. especially the bacteria thing.

So there was a case (well many but one I saw) where a dogs tongue was very overgrown, they ended up cutting the tongue in half because the part sticking out was basically dried and disgusting, effects eating and probably hunting, for males it would definitely effect their ability to fight. Infection is a maybe tbh like if it got cut then yea.
Nursing and aftercare for newborns it would effect because the tongue doesn't allow for suction and the long tongue can't be as efficient in caring for cubs or just general hygiene.
Lions can't have Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (they can probably have a once off mutation of a longer than normal tongue though in the case of the dog) that I know of. Although this condition can cause rapid growth till age 8. One side of the body can look mildly deformed the syndrome also causes childhood tumors and higher chance for childhood cancer. < That's in humans

It would be cool if there where in-game effects to the mutation tho!
Correct me if I'm wrong on anything

My dog doesn’t have teeth so her tounge sticks out when she sleeps, it gets super dry and she drinks a lot. It’s not horrible but it annoys her fs

HOW DO THEY DRINK? Lions drink using their very flexible tongues to create a sort of cup with them. With an overgrown tongue, they would have difficulty getting it in their mouth...

Responding to the how would they drink question. I’m no biologist but I think an overgrown tounge may be more beneficial for drinking, they would still be able to cup it and i think they could likely splash it into there mouth or possibly even learn to drink like birds by tilting their head back.

They would prob be able to eat smaller bite sized animals such as birds, eggs, and rabbits.
