Nomads Of The Horizon
A wolf roleplay

Hellur! Welcome to Nomads Of The Horizon, a literate, realistic wolf roleplay. Our main goal is to create a fun environment, always open to new members that wish join the lands of Greylea.

The Rules

I. All LioDen Roleplay Rules apply.

II. No godmodding, powerplaying, gary/mary issues, etc.

III. Posts should be in third-person and past-tense, and players are expected to use correct spelling, grammar, capitalization, and punctuation to the best of their abilities. At least a paragraph is required.

IV. We know that life can get in the way sometimes, but please, if you know beforehand that you won't be able to post for a while, let us all know!

V. Fade to black when necessary. I suppose you all get it by now.

VI. Please be polite to everyone OOC. If there is any problem with other members of the roleplay, i would like you to let me or moderators know rather than creating something unnecessary.

VII. You cannot harm or kill another character without making the action an attempt.

VIII. For the most part we are a realistic wolf roleplay; the only fantasy elements should be the characters’ “humanized” personalities and their ability to speak. This means no magical abilities, accessories, or unnatural physical traits (wings, horns, etc). However, there are some new exceptions about the eye colors. You will find a size chart and a eye color chart for better guidelines below.

IX. We encourage you to 'follow the current'; Not knowing what will happen makes the roleplay more interesting and fun, reason why we attempt to avoid OOC plotting. "Character A should meet Character B" is acceptable. "Character A and character B should become mates and start a pack" is not.

X. There will be no formed packs at the beginning. These will be created throughout the roleplay, and to do so, a minimum of five wolves with a common goal assemble and claim a land as their territory. In order for the pack to be accepted, the player of the lead wolf should PM me the pack creation form (See below) will all the information needed. As for now, we believe that three packs would be a good maximum, though this can change in the future depending on how many members join. Also, please don't create packs right away.

Pack Creation Form

Name of the Pack:
Members:
Ranks:
Territory claimed:
Pack description: A brief explanation of the pack's way of life/alignments, etc.

Wolf Sizes

Made with PhotoScape. Heights are measured at shoulder-level.

Eye Colours

In the real world, the majority of wolves have amber eyes. However, there are rare instances of brown, gray, orange, yellow, blue, and green. For the sake of fun and diversity, we allow characters with any of these natural eye color. Although these are rare genetic peculiarities as well, melanism and albinism are allowed. For these two, there will be a limit of one wolf per case; One melanistic wolf, one albino wolf. Any other color not mentioned above is not allowed (Red eyes are an exception only for the albino wolf).

I suggest you take a look at the page itself (Click for the source). It has great information about wolves' lifespan, reproduction, etc.

There are a bunch of things wolves do and do not have, but as it was said, this is an rp, and I believe whatever the appearance guidelines are are up to the owners of said rp.

To be fair, I think this is a pureblooded wolf rp, so like, natural mutations would be fine. Hence the one dwarf, melanistic, etc ones. Valid ones that can happen in the wild, so albinism isn't that bad as like, evidence of dog interbreeding. Though that'd make an interesting back story, as dogs/wolves sometimes do interbreed in areas they intersect!

(ETA, I've been told off on having a dwarf before xD)

Um is it ok that Varda (page 3) is part dog? (No one can be certain, since she didn't know her father and her mother was depressed and hardly talked at all, least of all him ...)

To make it easier on all of you as you're are saying one thing and meaning another, Wolves, pure blooded ones in fact do have green and blue eyes along with a greyish silver. It is rare such as a real albino and melanistic wolf. I've some in the wild, up close from a hiking trip, with a black wolf with blue eyes. They were a very light shade but they were blue. Thus us why Legoland and Christi put up guidelines and are trying to keep it realistic as possible and are alloeing rare eyes colors such as blue and green to be used.

(But thats just me. *Sips tea*)

So... does anyone actually have the link to a reputable source saying blue and green eyes are possible in wolves? If not...

Could not find scholarly articles in scholar (read, first page), so going on for this lady And an explanation of the grey-eyed wolf as a genetic condition that affected him in puphood.

The example was from an .org website, apparently?
ETA: never knew cataracts could cause blue eyes, too, that's interesting.

All,

I am currently PMing Christi so a final choice can be made. I want to apologize to all of you for the bother and trouble. According to what i found around internet, Imperial and WInder are correct. I quote;

"Grey wolves' eyes may be brown, yellow, orange or pale green. Sometimes the pale green ones can appear blue from certain angles or in certain lights. It is possible that a wolf could turn up with blue eyes due to some genetic defect - this occasionally happens in other species, such as horses, and is called being 'wall-eyed' - but this would be extremely rare."

However, we will let you know what we decide and add charts for better guidelines. ^-^ On a side note, we should all head to the Chat Thread. xd

Thanatomaniac,

Hellur! We are still accepting, yes. c: I looked around a bit and melanism is a 'natural' genetic mutation, more commonly found than albinism. So feel free to create him/her! As for the emergency, i hope everything and everyone is alright!

Charlie Scene,

A drawing is completely fine. c:

Larentia,

I am not quite sure if we would allow a dogwolf mix. However, i'll let Christi help me out over here. >.>

Lunaria's Grace,

I am sorry, but if you can't read carefully the main post, specifically the application form, you can't be accepted. I suggest you either read the post until the links, or take a look at other member's applications.

Um, i dont know much about wolves btw, and you are kind of coming off rude to me. I'm VERY shy and rping is the only thing i can do that doesn't make me feel unwanted, although right now, this rp feels like i am unwanted. Maybe you or someone could help me understand how wolves are. Also, about like offspring or anything i have missed, cant it be "unknown" not "needed for the application"?

THE DEETS

APPEARANCE

Solidly built from head to toe, Karael has a broad skull, broad paws, and heavy shoulders. His dark pelt is not a uniform black but shot through with the rich reds, chocolate browns, and grays of his undercoat. Dense with muscle and thick of pelt, Karael prowls with his ears and head erect and his tail flagging at his heels, quick and sure, and while not the largest of wolves, he is surprisingly heavy for his size, dense as he is with muscle. Scars stipple his hide beneath the thick protection of his coat, invisible to all, save for the faint silvery scar slicing across the front of his right foreleg and the delicate notch in the outer rim of his right ear, both tokens earned in a fight with another wolf.

PERSONALITY

Karael's amber eyes stand out clearly in the dark frame of his face, giving the impression of a hard, keen stare, and really it isn't so much an impression as a truth. Karael doesn't see all or even claim to do so, but he what he does observe is more than enough for his purposes. While by and large a simple creature, he is far from stupid. Karael, like any other creature, has needs and wants, but where some might hesitate to take from others to fulfill their own basic requirements, Karael has no such compunctions. He is young and fit and strong and whether prey or wolf, if someone cannot defend what they have, then they clearly aren't fit to keep it.

Boundaries, no matter how large or how small, chafe at Karael like sap in the fur. Penned in any sense of the word, he is quick to tear through any obstacle with tooth and claw. Karael has little appreciation or patience for demands, but he is not so unreasonable as to refuse a request. Few, however, would accuse Karael of kindness, fewer still of generosity, much less Karael himself. Nothing given for free, after all, is ever so sweet as something earned. Perhaps surprisingly, Karael's patience seems almost limitless. As at ease lying patiently in wait for hours as he is in motion, Karael brings a hunter's keen, hungry focus to all that he does.

HISTORY

The third born of his mother's third litter, there was nothing particularly auspicious about Karael's birth. He was neither the largest--Navi--nor the strongest--Iklan--of his litter, and the moon, while fat and silvery in the sky, was not at its fullest or thinnest. The entire litter was fat with their pack's good fortune and Karael was no exception. What Karael was was precocious.

Seshayn was always the first, first to try, first to fail, forever leading the way.

Navi was always the last, boisterous in play but timid in the face of the new and the strange.

And Iklan was always the one with his head planted against Navi's solid haunch, wriggling excitedly all the way.

But it was always Karael, watching, who figured out the trick of the thing and slipped in and out with the prize of the day firmly in his grasp.

And so they grew up, and Karael grew long and gangling and dark of coat, outpacing even Navi with the breadth of his head and the barrel of his chest. Now it was no longer Seshayn who lead their tumbling pack, but Karael who struck out with a ragged tail of panting adolescents at his heels. Even in winter, their territory kept them well, and with each new hunt, Karael grew more and more confident in his skin, delighted with the neat coil of his muscles, the sturdy frame of his bones. To hunt was to live, and Karael lived to hunt, to run, to test himself in every conceivable way from playful tussles with his siblings to the increasingly less forbearing scraps with his father.

When the end of his second winter drew near and Eilarin grew testy with Seshayn and Navi, and Namoth began to chase him from the pack site, it was, perhaps, inevitable, that his fraying temper snapped. Karael was young and strong and not at all prepared for the vicious clamp of his sire's teeth about his neck, or the snarl that followed him all the way to the boundaries of their pack's lands. Karael, pride smarting as much as the shallow scrapes about his collar, did not look back even once.

He ranged for a time, picking up more knowledge, more scars. Hunting was not so easy without his pack of three at his heels, and when the nights grew long and his sides grew impossibly lean, he learned to sniff out the edges of a pack's boundary and dig up their winter caches. It was during one such raid that Miahreet appeared. Sleek and small and grey, she scored a nip at his haunch before he could even twist round to meet her, and when he'd pinned her on her back in the snow, lips drawn back to show every long white tooth in his mouth, she had called him a thief. She'd smelled of lone wolf, so he had wasted no breath in stating the obvious; she was leaner than even himself.

They fed, if not well, at least well enough that winter. Miahreet whelped in spring, a litter of two, a male with one white paw and a female with a white spot on her chest. Miahreet called them Umaeq and Irial, but Karael called them both cub until they were old enough to open their eyes and crawl about the small den. Karael ranged through their sparse territory, hunting and marking out the suddenly narrow boundaries of his world until the itch in the pads of his paws could, at least, be blamed on a day's hard travel, a night's long run.

They shared their territory with a ribby cougar. Miahreet and the small cub she'd called Umaeq did not last to the end of summer. Alone with Irial, Karael waited only long enough for her legs to grow strong enough for a day's walk, and once again, he did not look back.
