Meaning ‘pure ancestry’ in Swahili, Mhenga Usafi is a clan dedicated to those who wish to avoid inbreeding in their pride either partially or completely. We welcome all manner of prides, be it natural, celestial, ‘colorbombs’, or anything else! The main purpose of the clan is to put those interested in ‘clean lined’ lions in touch with each other, through studs, cub sales, and more. @Scottish Well, I don't 100% agree with that. Careful linebreeding exists in pretty much every breed of domesticated animal and it's not that uncommon in the wild, though it's very rare that fathers breed their daughters, etc. However, for example, all the wolves currently in Yellowstone National Park are bred from 31 released in two years, back in the late 90s. There are currently over 100 of them. So there is probably some inbreeding. As far as is known (and they're closely monitored), the population is extremely healthy. Inbreeding itself isn't bad. It's just when it's done very closely or to the extreme. Animals aren't humans and what -not. However, since I write/roleplay/whatever my lions as sentient 'people' (sort of like TLK), I tend to avoid inbreeding because I feel like they would avoid it. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Eh, people can breed what they want and doesn't bother me. I just personally like avoiding it because it fits my pride and it's an interesting challenge. 0 players like this post! Like? |

So, I have two heritage related ideas for my pride. One is to give each "foundation" female a last name of her own; and each heir of hers that replaces her as a hunter/lioness in the pride has that name. For example, if I named one "Nala Mfalme" than her daughter would be "Kiara Mfalme", etc. etc. The other idea is to have the cub's "second name" be the first name of their father. Like cubs by Haidar would be "Simba Haidar" or "Nala Haidar". Which do you think sounds better? 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Katavi I'd honestly named them after the one that would be a permanent fixture within the pride. Do you plan on keeping a line of males and then acquiring the females of his pride, or vice versa? If you plan on keeping the females and then getting the male from an oustide pride, I think identifying them after the mother would be better. ... Wasn't that how they did it in that caveman's book of yours? I think so xD 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Berenos In the Earth's Children, they traced a matriarch line in the sense of "the child of my mate" was the leader's heir, etc. Of course, this was back before they figured out how genetics worked and where babies came from! In several parts of Africa, children have the father's first name as their "second name", which is separate from their surname. So, say...a guy named David had two kids named Sam and Anna. Both of them would be named Sam David and Anna David. But when Sam had kids of his own, they would be named John Sam, etc. And that is actually a good question! My first instinct is to be more 'realistic' and basically have the daughters/ladies of the pride hold it together like real lions do. Most prides are made up lionesses and their daughters, grand-daughters, sisters, aunts, etc. It's the males that come and go. 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Mary That sounded like me for a moment. What are your thoughts of a possible "cozy"marking? What do you think it entails? 0 players like this post! Like? |
