A feminine, monotone voice echoes through the halls of a suburban family home, "An estimated 250 dogs live at the plant itself, 225 in the city of Chernobyl, and hundreds more roam around, for a total of more than 1,000, according to SPCA International. Wolves and the need for food have driven the dogs from wooded areas surrounding the plant into the Exclusion Zone." - Spcai "Don't watch something so depressing, sweetie. The puppies are fine." The screen goes black.

setting music
The city is picturesque from the television screen. Though living amongst the crumbling, overgrown, radioactive buildings is another hell entirely. Dogs whose ancestors were abandoned by their masters in order to escape the explosion generations ago still remain here to this day, too far into the Exclusion Zone to be saved by any humans residing outside of Chernobyl. Many have been born with birth defects, sometimes visible but more often affecting their minds, organs and lifespans. Two major packs have risen out of the dust, Abolition and Insurgent. The packs have always been at odds but due to the encroachment of wolves and low resources, space is low and tempers are at an all time high. Can they come together to overcome the odds or will their own greed tear them down?

Abolition
Power, strength and courage. We fight for what we believe in.

Abolition's territory consists of the Nuclear Power Plant itself, surrounding water channels and a small portion of woodlands.

gabu | abolition warrior | wolfdog hybrid

location ; abolition camp| mentions ; dove, levi, rutilis.

┏━ •◦இ•◦ ━┓

The soft drizzle of the afternoon sun dripped through the stained the warrior den. soaking into his large and broad grey body. his eyes closed as he had his long muzzle tucked into his white arms. his ears flicking at the soft murmurs of his pack, even stirring him awake as everyone got louder. the harsh tone of the leader was what caught him off guard. confusion staining his face as he raised his white muzzle, the stale scent of the warriors hitting the roof of his mouth. Gabu gazed around the dark den before lowering his large head down, placing one paw of the other in a wary state. hoping no one noticed how late he woke up. embarrassment heating his thick pelt while he walked out, keeping his head low and his body small. he was insecure about his massive size, trying not to tower over the other canines that tried to talk to him. walking cautiously around the clearing, his grey ears flicked at the murmur. it was meek and high-pitched, it sounded like a pup. Gabu paused for several heartbeats before shaking his head, dismissing the voice as a simple mind trick. he began trotting across before nearly tripping over his paws hearing the voice again. his dark brown eyes, worn and tired, gazed around the clearing before spotting the tail tip of the healer. curiosity prodded his sided as he kept his head low, his dark grey pelt masking well in the shade as he approached the healer, the scent of the warrior hit him along with the sent of a pup. he wasn't wrong, victory filled his large chest until he got closer to see the small pup. sympathy overwhelmed him instead and he lowered his white and grey head. his black nose nearly touching the ground as he opened his maw, "Hey there, little one. what are you doing out here?" he tried to make his voice sound soft, but unfortunately, it still sounded gruff and rumbly like the embodiment of a wolf. Gabu wished that he had different parents sometimes, but if all else failed, he could go out in the territory and enjoy the weather. "I don't smell blood on him, but I also don't smell the other pack," he reported to the healer, keeping his head low to meet her eyes. Gabu always liked being around the healer, the sweet and familiar smells of flowers and herbs was always a pleasant and calming feeling. he also liked to keep some of his bug collection near the healer den in case. his attention was brought back to the mysterious pup. he lowered his large and skinny body near the pup. his thick tail touching the ground along with his belly. his dark brown eyes stared into the pups, wanting the pup to feel secure with them. "you need any help?"

Rutilis | Loner | Pup | Location: Abolition camp; outskirts | Mentions: Gabu, Dove, Levi

Rutilis had been forced to lay down. His heart ached metaphorically and, unfortunately, in a literal sense as well. He just wanted Mama and Papa. He just wanted comfort. He just wanted to watch the stars, curl up against Papa, and sleep. His breathing was shallow, as inhaling too deep sent a sharp pain through his chest. His behemoth paws were stretched straight out, his tongue hanging from his gaping little mouth. His eyes bore the panic a separated child might feel when they lose their parents in a grocery store. He knew they would find him, but until they did it was scary. Rather unnerved, Ru stared through the chain link. Had they somehow gotten over there? Just as he scraped together enough breath and resolve to call them once more, the sound of paws reached his ears.

He watched a stranger rush past him, do a double take, and return. He watched without alarm, no dog had ever hurt him, and his chest was still too tight to allow him to rise. At her inquiry he responded, audibly short of breath, attempting to regulate his words and wind to ease the fist in his chest. "My name is Ru." He paused here for a moment, drawing in more air than he'd been able to before. The anxiety still clouded his chest and rose up like bile in his throat, but his heart rate was gradually dropping. "I'm looking for Mama and Papa." He peered past Dove as if she might have the pair in tow, to no avail. He then sought the stranger's gaze again. "Have you seen them?" His voice was quiet, his words slow, a paradox for a puppy his age. Then, a second stranger appeared, a dark one, and sent him a muted, submissive greeting. Rutilus blinked in return, before repeating what he'd said to Dove. "I'm looking for Mama and Papa. But they'll be back soon." He turned his head to look over his shoulder, but a burning sensation at the base of his skull stopped the swivel. A wound. How did that get there?

Perplexed, Ru's attention slowly returned to this dark, massive stranger. Even the hybrid's gravelly voice didn't phase the pup. He was quiet, but he had never been given a reason to fear strangers, especially ones that sounded as nice as these two. When the dark one laid beside him, Ru shuffled a bit so he could face the mix. Thankfully, no sharp pain accompanied this action. His chest was loosening, the fist gradually vanishing. "I don't think I need any help. They should be back soon, anyway. I just don't know where they went. Have you seen them?"

Levi | 4 Years | Male | Central Asian Shepherd Mix | Abolition Warrior
Location: Abolition Camp | Mentions: Dove, Kirtonos, Rutilis, Gabu

Levi trotted after Dove with urgency, his hackles rising slightly. The sound became more distinct the closer they came, the voice of a pup crying out for help. His pawsteps hastened, nearly tripping over the healer as she veered toward something hidden within the tall grass. He pressed into Dove's side, sensing the rush of emotions washing over her once they came upon Rutilis. The newcomer asked after his parents and a feeling of dread dropped into his stomach. Levi examined the wound but found he didn't have the expertise to know whether or not it might prove fatal. He tried to read Dove's expression but couldn't tell what she was thinking through her distress.

As Gabu approached, stating he couldn't scent anything unusual about the pup Levi scowled at the other male incredulously. "Your nose must be broken then, and your eyes too," he retorted in a skeptical whisper, the reek of blood and sight of Rutilis' wound leaving him on edge and a bit sick. Other scents clung to the pup. Dogs he assumed to be the poor child's missing parents and another he knew far too well, bear. His eyes scanned their surroundings as if expecting the beast to burst through the fence and finish the job. "We should get this little one back to camp."

His eyes lowered to the pup's, a kind smile crossing his muzzle. "We haven't, but we can look for them," he promised, tail wagging behind him. "In the meantime would you like to see our home, and meet our leader? You've come all this way after all, even if unintentionally. I'm sure Mercy would love to see you. Will you come with us then? Just for now?"

Dove | Abolition | Healer | Location: Abolition Territory | Mentions: Levi, Rutilis, Gabu

Dove lets out a long, shaky sigh as the two males approach behind her. She paces a few steps away and stares at the nuclear plant as her mind races, contemplating how to best handle this situation. "Gabu, Levi. Perhaps you two should speak to Mercy about creating a search party with the other warriors to find.. his parents." She says somberly, hoping the two would catch on to her true meaning of speaking to their alpha about the possibility of a bear being in the area. The thought of her pack being put in the path of a bear attack threatened to shake the calm canine's resolve though she quickly stuffed the thought down and returned her mind to task at hand.

She turns back towards the pup, nodding at Levi's words. "You look tired, Ru. Let's get you out of the heat and find you something to eat for now." She gingerly lifts Rutilis up by the scruff, careful not to disturb the wound on the young pup's skull. She gives her two pack warriors a long gaze before hastily trekking back towards Abolition camp. She would speak to Mercy about the pup once she tended to his wounds and the warriors explained the situation with the bear. Hopefully her leader would allow him to stay, if she didn't.. Dove shakes her head to rid it of the thoughts. That wasn't possible, she wouldn't allow that to become the outcome.

Quillon | Abolition | Warrior | Location: Abolition Territory | Mentions: Dove, Rulitis (Indirectly) Levi, Gabu (Directly)

Quillon's ears and withers spasm as if to fight off invisible biting flies as he makes the long walk back towards Abolition camp with a newborn fawn dangling from his teeth, seemingly in no hurry to get there fast. His gaze was fixed on the white tower in the distance and he struggled to keep his limbs moving in the correct fashion, though that was increasingly difficult the more he walked. He closes his eyes, taking in the smell of moisture and decaying plant matter from the cooling ponds as he grew closer and closer to the nuclear plant.

His eyes could make out the faint outlines of his pack members as he approached the fence bordering the plant. Quillon's massive, curled tail gave them a halfhearted wave in greeting as he reaches them. Odd. He could have sworn he saw the pack's healer, Dove among them just a moment ago. His mottled nose twitches at the strange collection of scents surrounding the fellow warriors and his hackles raise in response. The body in his mouth stopped the flow of angry words from exiting his throat though the harsh, confused gaze he gave Gabu and Levi was more than enough hint at the emotions and questions bombarding his mind.

gabu | abolition warrior | wolfdog hybrid

location ; abolition camp| mentions ; dove, levi, rutilis, quillon.

┏━ •◦இ•◦ ━┓

the gentle breeze of the wind passed through his thick grey fur, not getting a chill through his bones as he stared at the golden pup. his large dark ears flickered as he listened to the tiny voice, raising his long muzzle to tilt his head. "I understand, but it's dangerous for a little pup to stand around," he told the dog, his attention going to the male warrior on the comment of his nose. a small frown tugging on his ebony lips as his gaze fell on the pup, avoiding the eye of the male dog. "I meant he doesn't smell like the other pack. he smells of his mother's milk and ash. the blood is fresh, but he doesn't smell like the other pack." he explained, but everything fell silent as the voice of the healer came back. her herb scent lingering in the air, hitting the roof of the wolfdog's mouth. sweet and familiar. watching her slink away, sadness tracing his face as his eyes glanced down at the pup that swung from her jaws. Gabu rose onto his large paws as a heavy sigh emitted from his nose, "I hope Mercy accepts the pup. I don't want to live with the thought of turning away a pup." he whispered to himself, his long white legs taking a swift step out as he wanted to get ready to talk to the leader. Gabu always looked up to her, being a wolfdog such as himself, he admired her courage and ambition as a leader. he was happy to know there was a hybrid like him, and meeting Mercy helped him settle the racing thoughts in his mind every day. the grey wolfdog hummed seeing the male dog approach him and Levi, his ears falling back and lowered his large head. not wanting to explain the situation to the other male, and kept his eyes on his white paws. he didn't want the news of the pup's arrival to take a whirlwind in the pack, but he knew it wouldn't be such a secret if they met with Mercy. "good morning." he mumbled to the dog, allowing for Levi to explain the situation if he wanted to. Gabu wasn't sure if he should talk about the pup, or if he should keep it silent.

Kirtonos // Abolition Beta // Location: Abolition Camp // Mentions: Open

With the warrior and healer pair departing, the black shepherd hyrbid leaned downward to observe his healer's work. She was pretty handy with those herb things, he had to admit it. However, in the back of his mind, Kirtonos still considered himself to be a waste of needed supplies. It was just a little bite, nothing in comparison to potential injuries that might be received from a foe more fierce. Regardless, it wasn't worth arguing. What was done was done.

He ducked out of the healer's den with his head and tail held high, although his gait was a little off due to the overall weird sensation of having something wrapped around his leg. The beta staggered down the steps with his long pink tongue lolling out the side of his jaws, large ears pricked as he sought out his next task for the day.

Ellesmera// Insurgent Scout // Location: Insurgent territory // Mentions: Open

The best way to start a perfect morning? A good, long, walk to stretch those long legs.

The young female moved with confidence and fluidity, like she had walked these grounds for countless ages. Which was true, in a sense. She patrolled the territory as frequently as possible, never hesitating to stop a stranger and have a good chat to gain any possible intel. In reality, running out to go scouting gave Elle an excuse to avoid daily socialization and the same old boring stuff. Nobody liked her hobbies, they called her weird and whispered rumors under their breath.

Other animals, like the colorful insects and strange creepy-crawlies, didn't talk behind her back. She had to admit, some creatures that were impacted by radiation were down-right scary and strange, yet at the same time, they fascinated her. The world was so full of discovery and the impossible- how could someone just sit around and ignore it all?

Kaz | Loner | Location: Abolition Woodland | Mentions: Open

The small, skinny ball of fur was in tears, tearing away from the place he had called home. Away from the terrifying lynx that had ripped his face and torn his shoulder down to the bone with her claws. He had to run. Get away. Far. Far away.

When he stopped, everything was different. This place didn’t smell like home, or look like home. Where was he? What was this place? The pup scrambled under a tree root, whimpering. When the tough bark started scraping at his mange, he had to move on. He wandered, flinching at every sound and jumping at every falling leaf

Levi | 4 Years | Male | Central Asian Shepherd Mix | Abolition Warrior
Location: Abolition Camp | Mentions: Dove, Rutilis, Gabu, Quillon

The way Gabu's gaze fell away, refusing to meet his, brought a sense of guilt to Levi. Perhaps he had been a bit harsh. It wasn't typical for him to be snappish. The sight of a wounded pup and the prospect of a bear being in the area left him feeling strung tight with tension, but that was hardly an excuse to turn on a fellow warrior. Levi leaned down, nosing Gabu's shoulder in a silent apology before nodding in agreement with Dove's advice. Preparing to dart after her so he would make it back to camp either before or at the same moment as the healer, Quillon's arrival saw him pause midstep, interrupting his plans. The dog's mouth was full of prey, but Levi could see the fury and confusion in his eyes.

"Easy, Quillon," he greeted, seeing Gabu was in no hurry to keep the other male informed. "We found a pup. He was injured and carried a hint of bear on his pelt. Dove's taking him back to her den and the rest of us need to report to Mercy right away. Let's not panic just yet boys. The fact there isn't a bear barreling toward us as we speak is probably a good sign it's not following the boy. If it's still in our territory we'll track it down and deal with it then," he spoke confidently before turning back towards the pack, his strides quick. As they entered and he spotted Mercy staring at them with sharp eyes, he nodded toward Gabu, urging him to speak with her as he swerved toward the healer's den, peering inside. "How's it going in here?"

Mercy | 5 Years | Female | Wolfdog Hybrid | Abolition Leader
Location: Abolition Camp | Mentions: Kirtonos, Dove, Rutilis, Gabu, Quillon

Mercy's gaze flitted upward, rays of light slipping in through the large tears in the ceiling to bathe portions of flooring in gold. The day would soon be at its hottest and it would be difficult to traverse the city without the risk of burning off one's paw pads until dusk. If she wished to leave the building before then now would be the time. The sound of claws clicking in an uneven gait drew her attention to Kirtonos. Despite his injury, he appeared bright and energized, prepared for his next mission. The edges of her mouth lifted upward in the faintest hints of a smile. "You should rest," she pointed out mildly. "At least until tonight. You'll have plenty to do then I can assure you."

A new scent wafted toward her on the breeze and Mercy's hackles rose, immediately rolling onto her paws. Dove appeared first, an unfamiliar pup with a bloodied skull dangling from her jaws. She didn't stop to explain, disappearing inside her den with urgency. A mixture of concerning scents hit her nose and she began making her way after her, but a trio of warriors bursting into camp blocked her path, resulting in her ears folding back. Her harsh gaze settled on Gabu and Quillon as Levi retreated, single sighted eye flickering between them. "What in the name of the ancestors is going on?"

•• ━━━━━ ••●•• ━━━━━ ••

Aleksei |3 Years | Male | Sighthound Mix | Insurgent Healer
Location: Abolition Woodland | Mentions: Kaz

It was most unwise to wander outside of one's territory, especially without backup, but Aleksei didn't have any intentions of getting caught. Frustrated with the lack of herbs to be found within Insurgent's own hunting grounds, the healer felt himself tempted to see what treasures the woodlands might hide. Luck was in his favor this noon it seemed, he'd come across something of interest. Aleksei examined the flowers with a critical eye, pawing at the bright petals gingerly. “You would make a lovely decoration,” he commented wistfully, “but I’m afraid you have more practical uses.” Leaning forward, he carefully sliced through the stems with his teeth before scooping up the prized plants.

A sudden whimpering saw him pause, dark eyes scanning the landscape, ears unfolding and perking straight up into the air. When nothing leaped from the woodlands at him he took a few tentative pawsteps toward the sound, sniffing for anything unusual. "Hello?" Searching around him, it wasn't long before he spotted something huddled beneath a tangle of roots. The creature smelled like another dog, but their appearance was distorted between the roots and their mange ridden pelt. "It's alright dear, come out, won't you? There is nothing to fear from little old me."

Kardama | Loner | Location: Abolition Outskirts | Mentions: Kaz, Aleksei

The scent of the injured Przewalski's horse she had been tracking was all but going stale as she trudged along one of the desolate roads bordering the forest and Abolition's pack. Small flecks of blood spattering the pavement catches the scarred female's eye and she bends down to study the bright red blotches, her lip curling back in thought as she scans the neighbouring foliage and dilapidated buildings.

The breeze brushes past her war-tarnished face, causing her to close her eyes as she takes in the smell of the pack belonging to the area along with two distinctly different smells. The scents of dogs not welcome to this part of Chernobyl, just like herself. The sickening whiff of blood carried with the wind caused something primal to click within the hulking female and she dips her head, legs instinctively carrying her off of the path and deeper into the forested area.

Kardama's tattered ears lie back as she takes on a cat-like stalk, her eyes training on the silhouettes of two male dogs ahead of her. She studies them for a quite a while, noting the young one to be the source of the stench. Her dark coat blending in with the shadows cast by the leaves above her, she steps out of the dark and blatantly makes her presence known to the two, "It isn't wise to be bleeding out in the midst of Abolition territory." She says, standing tall as she tries to assess the situation. "I know too well that outsiders aren't given welcome arms here and they're bound to smell you soon if you don't get that treated." She scowls at Kaz, motioning towards the open wound on the young pup's shoulder.

the basking of heat lapping against his thick grey pelt as he walked beside the warrior. the apologetic nudge from Levi warmed his heart, appreciating the sincere gesture, but his timid nature wasn't so grateful. his ears falling back in shame, knowing that he tried to hide hit claws and large teeth. Gabu never liked unnecessary hostility or fighting, but sometimes he had to intimidate his way out of sticky situations. giving a nervous smile to Levi, thankful for him to explain the situation to Quillon. During the walk, Gabu slowly began to raise his head. gazing among his packmates as the warriors neared closer to the den. the dust that speckled the air as they stepped forward. a ball of anxiety lurched in his white throat as they entered. Mercy, a noble and courageous hybrid, leader of a hardworking pack. She was everything Gabu wanted to be. he wanted to be confident, he didn't want to hide his teeth. he didn't want to feel so bulky compared to the other dogs, despite his skinny frame, he always felt like he was towering over the others. he wanted to hold his chin up high as she did. listening to her demanding tone, he brushed his thick tail against the flank of the dog. wanting to let him know he wanted to speak with her. Gabu raised his head, meeting her eyes with a solemn look. "Mercy. a golden pup named Rutilis was found by Dove and Levi outside of camp." he started, his voice still holding its grumbly tone, but he still sounded mature. "he is wounded on the head by a bear and is looking for his parents. Levi and I believe that his parents were killed by the same bear." His face fell, grimaced by the orphaned pup, but he continued. "he doesn't smell of the other packs. he smells of his mother's milk, blood, and bear. I don't think it's safe for a young pup to be out there with a possibility of a bear." his voice became firmer towards the end of his report, but his pelt flushed and was quick to put his ears back. his head held down slightly but kept his eyes on the female. hoping she could've agreed with them.

He bolted back under the roots, whimpering and shaking.

"B-but... I don't know how to treat it..." He whimpered, covering his head with his paws under the roots.

Kirtonos // Abolition Beta // Location: Abolition Camp // Mentions: Mercy, Rutilis, Dove, Gabu, Levi, Open

He raised his head abruptly as his leader spoke to him, his sharp amber eyes catching hers out of respect. Rest? But it was only a minor bite- pups suffered from worse wounds, he was sure of it! "I can assure you I'm fine."The beta reminded Mercy in a level tone, later tucking in his chin to bite at an itch on his jet-black chest. "But if it pleases you, I will...cut back on my activity until the sun begins to set." Kirtonos had dark fur, and the sun was bright and hot. It wasn't a good mix.

The male had to admit, he had always found his leader to be rather attractive, but considering how he was...it would come to no surprise that he fancied her. He fancied most everyone, really. He found Dove particularly attractive as well (he had a thing for pale pelts, apparently), but all of them were high ranks, meaning it was important that a professional relationship was maintained. Kirtonos lived for duty- he prioritized it over all things else. Like before, with...well, maybe it wasn't best to think about her. What mattered was that he chose his responsibly over a silly relationship, and the male was confident that he chose correct. Love: it made you weak.

...and really sad, frankly.

However, he did find his charming side to be very persuasive. Not just for others, but towards himself as well. That pitiful longing he felt made him weak-minded, and he despised it. He had to focus on what mattered most, and that was his pack.

At the sight of the injured pup, the sensation to be responsible and involved in keeping his pack safe and secure washed over him once more. His ears pricked and he found himself stepping forward on his unusually long limbs. "A bear could spell trouble for all of us. I'm glad Dove had company when she left to gather herbs." He made a mental note to ensure that the size of patrols were increased, in case the monster decided to rear its ugly head again.

"Indeed, it would please me," Mercy confirmed, satisfied Kirtonos wouldn't put up a fuss. His loyalty to duty was admirable, but the dark-furred male rarely considered his own worth. A dog like him would be difficult to replace and she had few intentions of finding him a successor any time soon. Even if that meant forcing him to sit still over a wound minuscule as a mutated rat bite.

Gabu's report was met with an unreadable expression, this new whirlwind of information crashing through her brain like a hurricane. Her first instinct was to go to the pup and mother him, some unseen parental instinct tugging her toward the healer's den. She resisted, pacing to-and-fro instead as if agitated by the news. Rutilis was in good paws. Dove would tend to him and see to his wounds. The possibility of a bear and two dead dogs within their territory was a far more pressing matter, as was the lack of herbs. Mercy doubted Dove would have everything she needed to treat the pup with what was left of her pitiful stash.

"You, Quillon and Levi must continue to the cooling tower alone. Ask Dove for directions and what she needs. Between the three of you, you'll have decent protection and more than enough mouths to carry everything back," Mercy growled, pelt bushing at the thought of a bear daring to prowl her woods. "After our herb stock is properly restored we will search for the beast as a pack," she concluded. "In the meantime, stay vigilant for any sign of it, or this poor bastard's parents," she added, her gaze straying to the healer's den.

Aleksei |3 Years | Male | Sighthound Mix | Insurgent Healer
Location: Abolition Woodland | Mentions: Kaz, Kardama

Double tails swayed behind him like welcoming banners as the pup inched forward, leaving behind his temporary safe haven. "My name is Aleksei, I'm from Insurgent; one of the packs that call this city home. Have you ever heard of us?" Deciding to leave out the fact they stood on enemy ground seemed his best bet at the moment, the poor dear was already nervous enough and there was no need to stress him further. "I'm a healer, I can help you," he added before moving closer, examining his bloodied face and shoulders with a neutral expression. The wounds were ghastly, but he wouldn't allow the pup to see his horror.

"Can you walk?" He questioned, taking in the state of him. The youngster was worryingly thin, but his blocky frame suggested his lineage were of a larger breed and the diminutive hound worried how well he could carry the lad. Aleksei wasn't built with a strong jaw or muscled neck. He was meant for running and taking down prey with sharp, tearing bites. Not holding or carrying things. Before Kaz could answer a new voice joined them and Aleksei whirled to face the unfamiliar dog, pelt bristling. The female confronting them was massive, but her words implied she was not of Abolition, and her scent further confirmed this observation.

He watched her warily, scowling a bit as Kaz retreated back into the roots. "I can treat it, if you come with me," he urged, shooting the towering female a scathing look for scaring his patient. "She is right though," he admitted reluctantly. "This isn't Insurgent territory, and none of us should be here. We should leave before a patrol catches on to our presence. If you come with me everything will be fine, I promise," he encouraged soothingly, even knowing these words might be false. The boy was malnourished, and mange was often difficult to treat, but he would certainly give this pup his best.
