Ho ho ho! Merry Lioden Christmas! I've decided it's the year to give back! My pons and gons have been very kind to me, and I want to host a giveaway for Christmas this year! I'll be giving away my young Leopon, Brillo, on December 26th. Link: https://www.lioden.com/lion.php?id=794228424212 (She is guaranteed to be below 8 years of age at the time the raffle runs. I usually roll my side once per week, sometimes 2-3 times, so she will remain young.) To enter, reply to this post! Talk, chat, yap away! To raffle this girl I'll be randomizing the page number, then the post on the page. The more you chat, the better chance you have! I'm not guaranteeing that there will not be other additional prizes added to the pool, as I've got a stash and just might be pumped to pop more surprise raffle options on, just for grins. As I have hybrids aging out of breeding, I may toss in additional frozen hybrid raffle prizes, as they won't do me any good sitting in my dynasty <3 No payment needed, just chat away! Share family memories, talk about your projects, tell me about your goals, anything! Have a conversation and get to know your fellow liodenners! Spam is not permitted, nor is harassment of the winner! If the winner does not respond in 48 hours, the raffle will generate a new winner! Raffle ends: December 26th If we reach 100 pages, an older hybrid is guaranteed to be added! Other additions to come! 19 players like this post! Like? On my name, I actually named myself after an airplane!! But it does fit with my love for marine biology :] Yes!! They do actually meet one another. They can't really communicate, given that they have such different cultures and even languages. They don't interbreed or mingle, and often will end up chasing one another off whenever they do meet. 0 players like this post! Like? |

There is actually a third ecotype of orca -- we know a lot less about them than the Residents or Transients, but we know they dive potentially the deepest out of the three, given that they have scars from cookiecutter sharks (a type of deepsea parasitic shark, named for the round, distinct scars they leave) and live in the open ocean. 0 players like this post! As a whole, they do live in every ocean in the world. They are actually pretty good at avoiding one another despite their conflicts. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Oh wow, now I'm intrigued. Since Big Mel was the first one /seen/ stranding, trying to catch a seal, does that mean it's common occurance now? So there are 3 types of orcas*. All of them don't interfere with one another, unless held in captivity. You also mentioned they have distinct cultures. How does that work? Do they communicate differently? Do they have different social structures? 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 23/12/24 @ 14:22:12 by Vors (#438282) |

It's still not very common, but it's a hunting technique now adopted by a few pods! It's most often seen in the Indian Ocean. They do communicate differently and have different behaviors, while they all have a similar social structure -- they're all matriarchal, meaning that the females are normally more dominant than the males. There are some exceptions, but they're only truly known from captivity -- it's not a very good indicator of how wild pods may behave, given that they have much less space to roam and different ecotypes that would never meet are often crammed together, though the captivity debate isn't what I'm rambling about at the moment. (Feel free to ask, though!!) 0 players like this post! Like? |

Off the top of my head, Transients may get annoyed by how chatty Residents are for example, and Residents are more often seen breaching and being more active. This can potentially ward off the prey the Transients are going after, although this *is* pure speculation. They are also genetically distinct and have no interest in one another, thus no reason to intermingle. Transient pods are typically smaller and have a more flexible social structure, while Residents are often seen in large pods with more rigidity. Residents in particular are known to gather in 'superpods', gatherings of several different pods, where they can greet one another, mingle and potentially find mates. 0 players like this post!
