Masters. They have been around for many years, keeping out of the eyes of the human. To humans, a Master appears as any other human being. They simply have powers beyond those of normal humans. Then, Masters were discovered many, many years ago. Because of this, they were each given an animal to protect them once powers developed. This animal was called a Guardian. These Guardian's are always larger than their normal counterparts unless the animal is already fairly large as normal. Masters and Guardians were each given a crystal that matched. This was their connection; Masters and Guardians can speak to each other. But no Master can speak to a Guardian that is not his own, but Guardians can understand all humans.
Shortly after the creating of the Guardians, different schools were made. Just a few in the entire country. Here Masters trained to better their powers, and learn to fight with their Guardian in battle. But, again the humans found the Masters. Much was done to conceal their identities, but nothing worked. The government waged war. All schools were set to be destroyed. The government succeeded. In most schools, everyone was killed. But at one, two Masters and two Guardians made it out alive. This is their journey.

Addie was right... Ryder knew it. But putting an end to them... It sounded like a solid plan. "We can fight." Ryder's voice was low and dark. It was the tone of someone tired of running; the voice of someone ready to take action. "We keep going. We get to the other school, and we rally them. We stay and fight." Ryder let her voice trail off. She knew it was a long shot even as she said it. Of course, she wanted to fight. She wanted to prove she was more than that mess that hid in the closet! She moved her arm and found Zayden sitting near her head. She could picture him in battle armour, chain link and shining in the sun. And she stood beside him, her dagger and power at the ready. And beside her, Adysin stood tall, ready to take down anything in her path. And beside Addie, Adamaris stood covered in the same armour that covered Zayden. They looked battle ready! But Ryder blinked, and suddenly the scene changed.
They were all battle wore, and on the ground before then lay hundreds of dead Masters and Guardians. Ryder gave a sigh as the scene faded from her mind. Who was she kidding? What good could she do? She was nothing but a runner. It was all she had ever done. She ran from her problems, she never stood to face them. "So, we find somewhere safe. We get to a safe place and pray it's enough."

Adysin studied Ryder for a moment, trying to figure out what was playing through her mind. The way she spoke, she sounded so far off, as though her mind had trailed off to a not so pleasant place. "I'm a fighter. I always will be. I can't kill the fight within me. So I will fight on, alongside anyone who needs my help." Fighting was second nature to Adysin. There had been a time where Adysin had been close to giving up the fight, but a new light had been set in her heart the day the sun shone down on her and Annabel. The door had been opened by a young man who brought her back on her feet and showed her a new world where Adysin learned how to fight. Ever since, Adysin fought every step of the way. Never would she let herself get that low, though it was a battle within her every day. Adysin pushed herself off of the ground using her elbows, and stood up. The boar seemed pretty ready so she walked towards the fire to check it out closer. The meat was a brown on the outside, a good sign. Adysin turned towards Ryder and spoke, "Can you put out the fire?" Leaning forward, she grabbed the stick the boar was roasting on. Quickly she speared the stick into the ground next to the fire so that it was standing up. With a knife she always kept in her belt, she cut away some pieces of the ready meat. Grabbing the slices she handed them to Ryder who had spoken again, speaking of some place safe. "Sorry it's not more." Adysin apologized. Taking a couple pieces herself, she settled herself back down on the ground next to Ryder. She took a couple bites from her meat before she rolled up the sleeves of her shirt, running her finger along one of her tattoos on her arm. It was a habit that she had when she was in thought, and right now she was thinking about how she couldn't offer anyone anything more than a few scrapes of meat.

Ryder knew all too well that Addie was a fighter. Every bone in her told her to fight. It was one of the things that Ryder liked so much about her. Her will... She was such a strong willed person. Ryder took the slices of meat from Addie and sat up. "Thanks, my dear," Ryder spoke the words without really thinking. Terms of endearment weren't something said between the two. But once her mind realized what she had said, she stopped mid-chew. "I-uhh...." Instead of finishing, she blushed bright red and took a second bite of the meat; she couldn't speak if her mouth was full! She folded her legs so she was sitting cross-legged. Ryder decided that the best course of action was to ignore it, and instead, she jumped back into their previous conversation. "So, we make our way to the school. We warn them, and then we get the hell out of dodge and make it to that town my mother told us about. We should be safe there, right?" Ryder hoped they would be. It did sound pretty ideal. A place for just Masters? Guardians running around. Everyone happy! And everyone understood everyone else. It what she had enjoyed most about the school. They all knew at least one very important thing about everyone else; they were all Masters. It wasn't a big secret that they had to keep hidden. But out here... Out in the real world, they had to keep a major part of themselves away from everyone else. Or else they would end up in a world of shit. And Ryder wasn't ready to deal with that just yet.

At the endearing term Ryder used, a flush crept onto her cheeks and she had to look away in order not to be embarrassed. It wasn't that she hated endearments, it was that most of them had been used on her in the wrong ways, the wrong time. They reminded her of a time that she tried to forget. They made her feel like she belonged to someone else, but in reality she belonged to only herself. But when they came from Ryder, it was different. She wasn't some sleazy man trying to get in her pants. In fact, Ryder hadn't even tried to get in her pants. So endearments from her didn't have the same affect on her, but it also helped that she hadn't used a very typical 'pick-up endearment'. But Adysin ignored it just as Ryder had done and continued her meal and conversation. At the mention of them warning them and leaving, a frown formed over her face and she gave Ryder a look. "Warn them and then leave?" she asked slowly before shaking her head. "I couldn't do that. I can't watch another school be attacked without helping them. Or even worse, walking away even though I know it's going to happen." Adysin mused. It didn't seem right to Adysin. She looked back at Ryder and shrugged nonchalantly, "If you don't want to fight then that's fine. But I will. I won't sit around knowing that people are dying for our cause." Adysin turned to Annabel and gave her some meat. The little girl took it happily and bit at it, not at all bothered by the fact that dinner was just a couple scraps of meat.

Ryder finished off her slices of the meat and crossed her arms on top of her knees, which she had pulled close to her chest. "I want to fight. I want to do the right thing. But you seen the same damage I did at the other place." Ryder knew she didn't have much to be talking here. She hadn't fought... Addie had. And Addie has survived. Ryder gave a sigh. "I just... I just don't want to risk losing you. I know I can't tell you not to fight. I would never try and do that. But I still can't shake the feeling that they will only be worse this time around. I fear they'll have more fire power. And I just want you an Annabel safe..." Ryder looked down at the little girl. She was so pure, snd being thrown into a world of pure hell, just because of her birth. They all had been. Just because of who they were. Ryder looked up at Adysin, her eyes were swimming with every type of emotion she was feeling. She just blew out a small breath of air. "But I'll fight. I'll stand by you and do all that I can and then some." The words came from the tiny girl with such strong conviction. She wouldn't sit out of a fight this time.

Adysin knew very well that Ryder didn't want to fight. She didn't want to fight for whatever reasons she thought were acceptable. To Adysin, those reasons weren't acceptable. Ryder wanted to keep Adysin and Annabel safe. But Adysin didn't need any protecting, she was the one who would end up protecting Ryder. As for Annabel, it was Adysin's duty to keep her daughter safe. A frown crossed Adysin's face and she crossed her arms over her chest, giving Ryder a pointed look, "I don't need protecting, Ryder. Especially not from you. And neither does Annabel." Her tone was firm and her gaze was unwavering. After stating the fact that she didn't need protecting, she continued. "What happened at school wasn't your fault. We weren't prepared. Which is what we can offer these people. We are going to warn them." It infuriated Adysin to know that Ryder thought she needed to protect them. Just as she stated, she had run and hidden in a closet as the battle had gone on. Adysin had been there, fighting to the bone. She did not need protection from a girl who ran away from her problems crying, rather than standing up and facing them. Adysin had been in a dark place once, wanting to run and hide, but she had gotten up. Now, it was time for Ryder to do the same. It was for that reason, when Ryder spoke her final words, Adysin lifted her gaze and tilted her head slightly, curiosity flickering through her gaze. Was Ryder really standing up and fighting? "Good. They'll need everyone they can get." she said finally, taking another piece of meat in her hands.

Ryder turned away from Adysin's pointed look. "Trust me, I know you don't need my protection. But that doesn't mean I don't wanna---" Ryder shook her head. "Nevernind. So we stand with them and fight. We do all we can and hope to hell that there's a better outcome." Ryder reach down and pulled out her dagger. "I'll have to get better at this thing, thing." But the idea made her smile. She would be able to defend herself. That was happy with. She wanted to prove that she could do it. She wanted to make up for all the times she'd run. But that didn't stop the what if questions from running wildly through her mind. She knew she'd be lost if she lost anyone with them now. Even Adamaris, and the large wolf wasn't even her own guardian. But the girl had grown attached to their little ragtag group. And she wouldn't trade it, even Adysin's grumpiness, for the world.

Adysin watched her silently as she stumbled upon her words, but finally seemed to manage to find the right words. She watched as Ryder pulled out the dagger that Adysin had given her, and a small smile crossed her face. If there was one thing she was passionate about, it was weapons. She believed that for every person there was, somewhere was a perfect weapon to match. It had been accurate for herself, and it had also worked for Ryder. Adysin remembered being excited when finding out that Ryder was a water bender, because she could put the weapon to good use. The dagger had been haunting her for a while, because she had seen it up on the wall for a while, yet she had never seen it in action. Until Ryder came along, and that excited her more than ever. "Yes you will. And I'll teach you." she said,
tilting her head so that she could rest her cheek on her fist. "It's been hanging up on the wall for years, and I've never met someone who could bend water and put it to good use." Annabel shifted next to Adysin, calling her attention. There was nothing more beautiful in the world than to watch her daughter just be. Without trying, Annabel could paint a smile on her face and make her soul shine with glee. It made her excited to see what weapon would choose Annabel, the way the bow and arrow chose her and the dagger chose Ryder. "I'll make sure that you have mastered that dagger." she promised.

Ryder smiled at Adysin's promise. "I'm glad you found someone to wield it." Ryder gave a little giggle. She had to admit, it felt nice to use it. During their earlier practice, she felt powerful. She felt useful. She felt like she might be able to do some damage if needed. She wasn't perfect by any means. At most, she just knew how to extend the water through the blade and use it as a weapon. She knew nothing fancy. If it came to a fight right now, she could hold her own for a bit, but she wasn't sure how well it would turn out. Ryder had always been a words over fighting type of girl. She never liked to harm others. But she figured that came from her years of dealing with her father. He wasn't overly violent. But... He loved to scream and yell and command a room. He always got his way. Ryder shook her head briefly, ridding herself of such thoughts. She didn't have a reason to think of him anymore. That was over with. She never had to go back to that house and be near that man. She could keep in touch with her mother without her father being in the mix as well. As Ryder drug herself from her thoughts, she glanced at Adysin and found her watching Annabel. This brought another smile to her face. Ryder loved watching Adysin watch Annabel. It looked as if Adysin was watching her entire world. And it made Ryder happy to see Addie happy, even in those brief moments. She leaned down and lay down on her side, facing Adysin before she spoke, "So, tell me, Addie. When did you pick up your first weapon?"

Adysin didn't understand Ryder. How could she be so happy in such a time of horror? Ryder always laughed and smiled. Perhaps it was all a show, and deep down she was miserable and hurting the same way Adysin was, but there was no way of telling. In order to find out, it would mean getting closer to her than she already was. And that couldn't happen. But then again, perhaps Ryder was just more of a carefree person who enjoyed life more? It bothered Adysin that she couldn't tell. Adysin tried to be happy, but whenever she did, she was rewarded by the pain of being treated horribly, or by the pain of loosing someone she deeply cared about, or having to give away a human being that came out of her own body. All the ways earth had come up to bite her in the ass, had made her sour. Had made her want to be miserable so no one would talk to her or bother her. Yet, there she was with Ryder, who wanted to talk to her and walked to knowing about her, slowly cracking open her shell like a stubborn walnut. Sighing, Adysin turned her face towards Annabel again, waiting for Ryder to speak again. When she did, he corners of her mouth twitched in a whisper of a smile. "My first weapon." she repeated, emerging herself in a memory of the time she had found a bow for the first time. "Well, it was back in Germany, I was about eight or nine. We had ourselves a combat trainer besides our father, and he showed us a room full of weapons much like the one at the school I showed you. Ever heard of, love at first sight? However cliche it sounds, it was. I saw it, and knew that this would be my weapon. Unfortunately I couldn't use it that well at the beginning and before I got really good at it, the whole accident happened." she explained. "Then I found it again after I got to the school. I didn't do much fighting during those three years in between." She remembered how the mahogany wood had gleamed on the metal wall of the weapons room, calling to her, begging to be touched by her. It had drawn her to it, but she hadn't been a natural at it from the start. It had been hard work to become strong enough to pull back the string and let an arrow fly from its center. But oh, how that first time had been magical. "I've always been a bow and arrow kind of girl. Though I do dabble in other weapons. I've learned to fight with swords, daggers, spears, and with shields. Of course with just my hands too. My master said the best way to be is, prepared for any weapon. You cant rely too heavily on one weapon. So I just learned a lot, but I prefer my bow." Addie loved her weapons way too much, but at least it was something she was passionate about.

Ryder listened happily as Addie talked. It was nice to hear a happy story coming from the girl. It seemed doom and gloom followed them everywhere. They couldn't catch a break at all. She could picture a tiny Addie picking up a bow and trying to shoot it. The thought made her smile. "I bet that was quite a sight to see." The girl lay back on the ground.,
her arms crossed behind her head. "Do you think we'll ever be truly okay, Addie?" Ryder knew her question was a loaded one. She meant many things by it... Would they ever be safe? Or would they always be on the run? Would they ever be okay in their own heads? Both of them had had so much happen. Granted Adysin had dealt with more, but Ryder had her share of pain as well. Would they ever be able to get over that and move forward? Hell... Ryder still cowered like a small child if any man raised his voice to her. Would they ever be okay? Would things ever settle between the two of them enough for them to figure out what the hell was going on there? Ryder didn't know. She didn't want to know the answer to any of them really... She just wished they could snap forward to when they would be okay... She didn't want to have to deal with the in between.

There were many things Adysin was, and many things she was not. One of them, was a pitier. She would never be seen feeling pity for someone, or tolerating someone pitying her. Adysin knew that Ryder had been through her own things, and perhaps they were not quite as bad as her own, she would never in a million years tell her that her problems were less than her own. Reason one was, Adysin was very much aware of the fact that for different people, they reacted differently to problems. Reason two was, having gone through things herself, she would never question someone like that. It had made her a good judge of character, and Adysin could easily tell if someone was lying or telling the truth about things they had gone through. At Ryder's question, Adysin let out a soft sigh and shrugged. She didn't know if they would be okay. They could die tomorrow, and they wouldn't know. They could die in ten years, and they wouldn't know. So, no, Adysin didn't know if they would be alright. Didn't know if they would even make it to see tomorrow. But she knew that they would have each other until they were safe, and that they would fight to be alright. "I don't know, Ry. I don't know." she said softly. "We could die tomorrow. We could die when we are ninety-years old. But I will try and make sure that everything will be okay. If I die, I'll know it was while trying to get you and Annabel somewhere safe, away from all this mess." It was a promise that meant a lot. Adysin never fought for anyone but herself, and having found someone who was worth fighting for, was remarkable. When if Adysin didn't know that meant she was falling for the small girl, it was in the middle of happening and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

Ryder gave a small sigh at the other girl's words. She wanted to offer up the same message as Adysin had... But Ryder had tried that before. All it lead to was a pissed off Addie. She didn't want that again. ANd Ryder understood where the girl was coming from. Adysin didn't need Ryder to protect her. But that didn't mean that Ryder didn't want to try. Oh well. She sat up and turned to Adysin. "Thank you." Her voice was sincere and grateful because she was. She loved to know that even when it seemed like no one had her back, Addie was there for her. Ryder then stood up and headed over to Zayden. "Come on... We still have a good bit of light left. We should head on a bit." Ryder started to pack her thing back into her and Zayden's packs. She was eager to go because she wanted to put more space between her and her family. She wasn't sure if she'd ever come back here. Not after the offer her father made. She pressed her hand into Zayden's shoulder fur and held on for a second. She'd never give him up. She'd never leave him. He was her protector, and she was his. They did everything together. As her thoughts continued to race around her head, she removed her hand from his shoulder and picked up his packs. She slung them over his shoulder. "Thanks for carrying this, Zayden." She then picked up her guitar and threaded one of the bags through the shoulder strap. She moved the instrument so that it rested in the middle of his back and was held down by the packs. "Is that alright? Can you still move fine?" She stepped back as he stood and walked a small circle around her. "Yeah, hardly know it's there." The large beast smiled at his master as she offered her thanks again. The pair then turned to Adysin. "Ready?"

Adysin shrugged when Ryder thanked her. It was more of a second nature to her, to protect the ones that she loved. Only, the one thing she always loved, was Adamaris and protecting her was easy. Now, there was Annabel. And Ryder. It was adding to her stress, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. Adysin just had to tell herself to go on with her life, to go on the way she always did. When Ryder got up and suggested that they move on, Adysin just stared at her for a while. As her eyes tracked the way she stuffed her things into bags, her thoughts running away from her. Her mind ran towards Sam at first, how her personality had drawn her in. Much like how Ryder's had. She remembered her smile, the way that the sun had shown on her jet black hair. It was a sad memory, really. She had been the first person to fascinate her, to pull her out of her shell in a different way than Thomas ever had, and now there was Ryder. Ryder, with her innocent smile and her small built that just shuffled along the road without any clue what she was doing. And what she was doing was drawing Adysin farther and farther into her trap. An endless trap of emotions that Adysin had tried to hard to save herself from. But there she was, emotions crashing down upon her. Anger, fear, affection, passion, sadness. It was all a whirl. It was too much. She could hardly breathe, she needed to breathe... Adamaris was at her side immediately, pressing her nose into the side of her face, telling her to take deep breaths and to relax. Taking a deep breath, Adysin shook her head, and within a second, everything that was choking her was gone. Adysin remained there for a moment, her hand clutching onto her wolf's silky white fur. Sighing once more, Adysin drew her gaze from Ryder and got to her feet, getting ready to move on. There was very little left of the boar, and Adysin figured that they could throw it into the bush somewhere to let the wild animals eat at it. Bending down, she grabbed the sketch pad that she had pulled from her bag. Returning it, she tidied things up in the bag. It didn't take long to have everything organized and she turned towards Ryder once she spoke again, "Yes. I'm ready. Let's get going." she replied, scooping up Annabel and settling her onto Adamaris's back.

Ryder started walking into the woods, opposite the way they came into the clearing. Zayden walked beside her, matching his large steps to two or three of hers. Through the silence of the forest around, Ryder heard her Guardian speaking to her telepathically. "So... Ryder, whats going on between you and Adysin?" Ryder glanced up at him, and odd look over her face. Whats was going on between them? They had had their moments and quite a few of them. But it seems that Adysin always came to her senses and ran away from Ryder. The girl sighed and stared back at the ground in front of her as she directed thoughts toward the large leopard. "I don't know, Zayden... I know what I want to happen. But it seems she may not want the same things." As she kept walking, Ryder felt a gentle nudge on her shoulder. She looked up to see Zayden leaning his head down and rubbing his nose on her shoulder, a loud purr vibrating leopard and girl. "Maybe it's not meant to be with her... You shouldn't try to force anything. I don't want to see you get hurt by her." Ryder reached up and patted his neck. "Thanks for the concern. What would I do without you?" She smiled up at him and kept walking. But his question still rang in her head. And his comment. Ryder changed a quick glance over at the girl. What if they weren't meant to be and all this ended in nothing but tears for her? Her mind started racing a mile a minute, she couldn't stop replaying all of their encounters and analyzing everything. After a few moments, she picked up a ball of water from a small puddle they passed. Keeping her focus on it and the ground in front of her, she moved the ball around in her hands. She'd make it one shape, then another. She turned it to ice and back to liquid. Ryder was doing anything to keep her hands busy and her mind off of Zayden's quesion and comment.
