The main focus on this thread is surrounding lions being named COVID-19 or Coronavirus for starters.
Other medical illnesses can be included too, depending on their context.

Short and simple; disease names should not be allowed. This doesn’t mean banning a user who decides to use it as a ‘joke’. Simply a warning and a mod reset of their lion’s name should be fine.

Code of Conduct 1.1b states “Users may not abuse, harass or in any other way purposely offend other users on site”.
Some people think this is a joke, and that in itself is offensive. What may not be offensive to you, can be triggering and upsetting to other people.
People on site could have lost family members to this/these illnesses and it shouldn’t be joked about publicly.

It’s okay to joke once in a while with your friends in a group chat, some people use ill humor to cope. But a public place with 2000+ active users a day is not the space for it.

The comments have discussed page after page that Lioden is supposed to be a get away from real life. This is even written in the Code of Conduct.
Naming a lion whatever you want is within your right, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of others as someone in a response on this thread posted.

This is not adding an automatic filtering system for names. That’s a bit extreme.

Also, I want to add that the block feature does not solve everything. You can still see their kings on Leaderboard, in the May event next month, there’s a toggle button to see a block user’s post in the forums.
Simply blocking them, does not eliminate the issue.

We’re in a global pandemic with people dying everyday.

And please know this thread has nothing to do with anything else besides being compassionate to other people who don’t find it as ‘funny’.

Special thanks to Roxanne (#121082) for helping write this out.

@Ascreaminggay

That's like calling your lion virus or plague which are generic terms for a whole group of things. Calling something covid, something that has caused a worldwide pandemic and has affected millions of people is clearly not being used for research or learning purposes.
People who have been affected by covid 19 or by cancer don't want to be reminded of these things on a pet sim. The statistics are that one in three people have been affected directly or will know someone affected by cancer, which is a lot of people.

I'm sure your circumstances are unique and isn't about medical terms that most people wouldn't know anyway.
This is to stop people abusing the loophole of naming their lions something that isn't specifically directed at a user to offend them, it's purely done for shock value.

On the fence about Cancer since i eventually wanted to do a constellation theme (and know multiple people that do have that as a theme), but i wholeheartedly agree that COVID-19, Coronavirus, and any other disease/virus-related names shouldn't be allowed.

@Lime I'm sorry you had to go through that. Thank god your cousin recovered..

Hi! I am supporting because it's a realy shitty thing to make fun of. You don't need to call your lion after any diseases not just cancer and corona virus. If a lion was called sars or mrsa or meningitis or ebola that would be just as bad. People are so dumb :(

@Creek

If you were to do a constellation themed den or whatever it would be obvious from the context that you weren't talking about the disease.
Everything that breaks the rules on lioden is a case by case basis anyway.

Thank you Creek, we are so lucky to still have him with us. And I believe your constellation theme would be perfectly fine. Sounds nice!

@Doods - Yeah, but if the name Cancer were to be not allowed, it wouldn't be manually done by each moderator going through your den. It would most likely be an automatic code-based thing that just blocks the name entirely (like you would see on other games) without any context..

Not usually. Disallowed names are usually removed by reports, or stumbling across it from my experience.

Hmm perhaps an appeal for it? Like it would notify an admin or mod and you'd explain the reason you want that name. But, they're busy as is so idk

Edit: ahh never mind!

I believe the coding doesn't block slurs either, and admins have to manually fix it, so this would be no different.

names can be told from context whether u mean a heartbreaking disease or a constellation.

and yes I think Roxanne is right

I wouldn't want a lion named say Lyme disease floating around as I had it when I was a kid many years ago.

So I can understand where you all are getting at. And especially naming a king after a global pandemic, not cool. Even if it is for shock value.

As for blocking, that only disallows the person from contacting you and from you seeing their posts on the forum (you can still see topics made by them unfortunately...) but you can still see their lions. It doesn't block the entire profile from being seen.

While I'm cool with a name like virus, plague, or disease, something that is a very specific disease Ebola,Covid, Sars to name a few is not so okay especially as people have died or have been personally affected. It is rather insensitive.

There aren't any banned terms on Lioden as far as I'm aware, one user pointed out slurs aren't even filter blocked, and I'm wary of starting now. However I don't think it's okay to make light of something like this, and people giving their lions those names should be reported, I'm sure the mods would be understanding about this.
