The main focus on this thread is surrounding lions being named COVID-19 or Coronavirus for starters. Other medical illnesses can be included too, depending on their context. Short and simple; disease names should not be allowed. This doesn’t mean banning a user who decides to use it as a ‘joke’. Simply a warning and a mod reset of their lion’s name should be fine. Code of Conduct 1.1b states “Users may not abuse, harass or in any other way purposely offend other users on site”. Some people think this is a joke, and that in itself is offensive. What may not be offensive to you, can be triggering and upsetting to other people. People on site could have lost family members to this/these illnesses and it shouldn’t be joked about publicly. It’s okay to joke once in a while with your friends in a group chat, some people use ill humor to cope. But a public place with 2000+ active users a day is not the space for it. The comments have discussed page after page that Lioden is supposed to be a get away from real life. This is even written in the Code of Conduct. Naming a lion whatever you want is within your right, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of others as someone in a response on this thread posted. This is not adding an automatic filtering system for names. That’s a bit extreme. Also, I want to add that the block feature does not solve everything. You can still see their kings on Leaderboard, in the May event next month, there’s a toggle button to see a block user’s post in the forums. Simply blocking them, does not eliminate the issue. We’re in a global pandemic with people dying everyday. And please know this thread has nothing to do with anything else besides being compassionate to other people who don’t find it as ‘funny’. Special thanks to Roxanne (#121082) for helping write this out. |

Honestly I think you should just report the names, block them, and let the mods take care of it on a case by case basis like they do already for offensive names. I don't really understand what is being suggested here, if not a word filter? The current system should already be able to take care of the problem, its just up to the mods and people reporting the names. ![]() |

The mods don't take care of the names when it is reported there. That's why there has to be a suggestion unfortunately, since the mods won't do anything to remove them or dis encourage them. ![]() |

@Two-Tibs From what I understand the mod response hasn't been to tell the offending users to change their names OR punish them for having those names, the suggestion is that it's acknowledged as a punishable offense Correct me if I'm wrong though ![]() |

Yep. Someone already reported it and was told it wasn't offensive, so this suggestion is essentially to acknowledge it IS offensive and insensitive ![]() |

Hmm. I'm very iffy when it comes to censoring words or topics, I think its a slippery slope, but I can understand that its a sensitive topic for a few people. I still think it should be dealt with on a case by case basis and not a blanket ban, but I will support so attention is brought to it! ![]() |

The suggestion is not to ban the words completely or filter them out. We aren't asking to censor them, we're asking for them to be handled by mods when they come up because naming your lion a disease that has killed thousands of people for laughs or shock value is insensitive. ![]() |

It's not specifically for banning. Usually when a lion name breaks a rule, they give a warning or even lose account standing and rename the lion to Mod Reset so you can change it to something more appropriate. ![]() |

Okay? You might want to change the suggestion to reflect that more, though, because it still sounds a lot like you're calling for a complete ban on it. ![]() ![]() |

They already did make an edit, saying "this isn't adding an automatic filter system." When I first saw the suggestion, my mind didn't go to a complete ban of the words altogether and it's pretty clear by the comments that it isn't meant for a filter. ![]() |

I'm kinda on the fence about this one, of course, slurs should never be allowed as a lion's name I don't necessarily see the big problem in people naming their lions coronavirus? I definitely don't like it but I would just block and ignore the user, yes it might only solve a part of the problem but if it offends somebody that much it doesn't hurt to just block them. I'm not against this suggestion but I'd like a more detailed/in-depth argument ^^ ![]() |

Full support. I'm honestly surprised it's not already against the rules to name lions after specific diseases since it can be incredibly insensitive. I guess I can see people hypothetically arguing that some diseases shouldn't be included like those that have gone extinct or aren't as prevalent as they were in the past, but like people have mentioned here already, why name your lions after those things? ![]() ![]() |
