I thought I'd post this here, since I see so many people who see no improvement in their own art, even though in reality you're improving every time you draw. This is the improvement I've made in the space of a year. January 2015January 2016You WILL get better, please have total faith in yourself and practise. Don't lose your passion and drive for art. <3 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Xylax You cannot compare art to walking. Everybody eventually learns to walk. That's just not even close. 0 players like this post! Like? Edited on 30/01/16 @ 13:32:15 by ClockKey (#74714) |

Very recently I learned that with art, you really have to find what works for you and make your own style out of it. I kept trying to force myself to do things that I was never really happy with. Xyl can tell you, I messaged him a few times trying to get lineart for custom decor right or even existent. I'v been doing physical background paintings for years, and I was never really into digital art until recently (like three months ago.), and then I discovered Manga Studio and their wonderful watercolor brushes and I've been happy as a bug in a rug since then. Your improvement is amazing, Feather. It's really cool to see that skills can be learned and honed in, with practice and the right attitude. ^^ 0 players like this post! Like? |

There is no new advice, and there is no quick fix, Clock. :3 You'll just have to do it the same way that everyone else does. If you refuse to try, then you won't improve - that is life. 0 players like this post! Like? |

I don't think Xylax's statement was meant to be taken so literally. Moreso, I think he meant that if you fall down and don't even bother getting back up, you'll never get there. Which applies to art very well. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Ahh fantastic to see, Fizzy! It's great how you've used the same image, and I can see the improvement for sure! <3 Thank you, Lassie! I really enjoy the painting style that you have going on, especially in the final image. 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Clock There's no magical way to get good at it. There are so many types of people, yes I get that. But it all boils down to how much work YOU are willing to put into it. That's the way it is for ALL types of people. If the same advice offered to you time and time again doesn't help, then you need to go about it your own way and find your own style. Work hard to perfect it. Because there is nothing anybody can do for you but offer out pointers that worked for them and other people, they wont know what works for you because they aren't you, but they have the experience that backs up their advice which is why they offer it time and time again. 0 players like this post! @Clock, As I found out, asking artists for advice rarely helps me improve. Yes, asking things such as 'How do you shade?' or 'What lineart brush do you use?' can help change the feel of your art, but it will not make you better. The only one that can improve your art is you! Go and google different animals, reference poses until you get a feel for their anatomy. An artist cannot tell you how to be the best artist there ever was. No one can really teach you how to draw, it's something you must learn yourself. Your style must be like your fingerprint: Unique to you and special! Take it step by step, is my best advice. Don't force yourself to draw if you don't feel like it, but as soon as you feel muse, grab a pen and start sketching whatever you want! If you don't like it, fine! Take a break, come back and keep going. Feather has shown art takes a long while, but in the end it's very much worth it! The main thing that will get you better at art is patience. It will not take you a few days or a few weeks to get better, it will take months and years to improve yourself! You just have to keep going, 0 players like this post! Like? |

@Clock, If it's ineffective, why does it work for so many artists? I don't understand what kind of advice you want to hear, because everyone is telling you things that genuinely work. There is no magic word that will unlock the very essence of art to you and make you amazing. If you can't handle this advice and the work it requires to become a good artists, then art is not for you. 0 players like this post! Like? |

Clock it just seems like there is something specific that you want to hear from us, that is not being said, and you refuse to accept anything that isn't exactly that. Since you keep repeating yourself now I advise you to stop posting here, ase you went offtopic, this is Feather's thread about progress in art. Please make your own thread if you seek various advice, and maybe make a list of what you expect to hear and what you don't want to hear, so that you won't be dissappointed. 0 players like this post! Styles such as TLK, Xylax has his own style, Feather has their own style that they've modeled after other people. Rembrandt had 3/4 lighting style, each artist can have a unique style. Picasso had Cubism....There's surrealism and so much more. I'm still working on my style.... style just means how the artist draws their subjects or pieces. 0 players like this post! Like? |

What I have learned is that art takes a lot of dedication, much like any other skill or trade. In the beginning you'll be clueless and trying to get a feel for it but eventually, you will improve. But you won't improve by not practicing or not trying to improve. It sounds exhausting, but by drawing daily, even for a few moments, you improve a lot! You learn things by looking at references, anatomy, bone structures, or even admiring scenery if that's your cup of tea. I have a folder filled up with tons of references. I went through google and searched for things like 'fox bones' or 'fox taxidermy mount' and by looking at those things, you get a feel for how the body connects to its parts. You learn about how bones join together, how sinew and muscles bind to the body, and how fur settles as well. As with any learned skill, you can't gauge everyone by the same ruler. Person A may improve lots in a year but Person B might not and that's okay! Just because you don't feel like you've improved as much or have changed much in a year does not mean your skill isn't worth honing, it should be an indicator that you want to improve more and you should put a little more time in or do things you don't ordinarily do. Draw things you're not comfortable drawing, do poses or perspectives or different angles you aren't familiar with. By doing things you don't normally do, you expand your abilities and get more experience. :) People often confuse 'style' for 'skill'. It's okay to have a style less realistic, it's okay to prefer to draw cute stuff instead of realistic stuff. You should work on what style feels natural to you - what makes YOU happy. Don't compare yourself to others because you're only going to kill your spirit doing that. You can never be anyone but yourself but that doesn't mean you can't draw inspiration from others and apply that inspiration to honing your own style. Do you, be yourself. Don't let art become a chore or put yourself on a tight schedule to improve, just take it on your own pace. ^ ^ I don't have any "specific" timed pieces, but I have this one from 2013: And this one from last year, sometime. 0 players like this post!
