The main focus on this thread is surrounding lions being named COVID-19 or Coronavirus for starters.
Other medical illnesses can be included too, depending on their context.

Short and simple; disease names should not be allowed. This doesn’t mean banning a user who decides to use it as a ‘joke’. Simply a warning and a mod reset of their lion’s name should be fine.

Code of Conduct 1.1b states “Users may not abuse, harass or in any other way purposely offend other users on site”.
Some people think this is a joke, and that in itself is offensive. What may not be offensive to you, can be triggering and upsetting to other people.
People on site could have lost family members to this/these illnesses and it shouldn’t be joked about publicly.

It’s okay to joke once in a while with your friends in a group chat, some people use ill humor to cope. But a public place with 2000+ active users a day is not the space for it.

The comments have discussed page after page that Lioden is supposed to be a get away from real life. This is even written in the Code of Conduct.
Naming a lion whatever you want is within your right, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of others as someone in a response on this thread posted.

This is not adding an automatic filtering system for names. That’s a bit extreme.

Also, I want to add that the block feature does not solve everything. You can still see their kings on Leaderboard, in the May event next month, there’s a toggle button to see a block user’s post in the forums.
Simply blocking them, does not eliminate the issue.

We’re in a global pandemic with people dying everyday.

And please know this thread has nothing to do with anything else besides being compassionate to other people who don’t find it as ‘funny’.

Special thanks to Roxanne (#121082) for helping write this out.

The thing about joking to cope, is that everyone needs to be aware of it. While for some people it might be a joke to cope, to others it could be extremely triggering. And let me tell you, so far the users I have seen with these names have done for shits and giggles, not to cope, one of them literally saying they did it just "because they could". Forcing people to change these names wouldn't harm anyone, and would benefit plenty if people, whereas keeping it would continue to harm people emotionally and honestly benefits no one.

I agree with War partially.

I’ve had personal family issues regarding Covid-19, and Cancer. If someone finds naming a lion after the disease soothing or to cope in a respectful joke, then that doesn’t offend me personally. I wouldn’t want people to be making ignorant jokes or comments regarding it obviously, but I don’t feel harassed or disgusted by it. If that helps them get through the tough time that they are having, then we shouldn’t stop that.

Not really up for an argument over it, love. I just am stating my opinion.

In honesty, it's their opinion, just as it's yours that lions with the name take it too far. There's points on both sides I can see. I don't think freedom of speech should only be limited to their circle of friends when Lioden is a lot of these people's safe spaces.

Like I said, we're all being affected, and I am one to use comedy for ease, they just do it a bit more publicly. While it's not my taste, I'm not really offended. I know they don't mean harm.

That's my final thought on this.

Have a good day.

I'm only responding with my own opinion, love. You wouldn't go out into a busy grocery store and joke about coronavirus in front of dozens of strangers, would you?

You may not find it disgusting or inappropriate but other people do. Think about that for a moment.
Just because you don't, doesn't mean other people don't.
Common respect to people are upset/triggered by it.

Inappropriate jokes aren't for public entertainment.

Lol. I love my words being twisted for your points.

I am not saying you don't find it offensive or that I don't agree that it can be harmful, but I don't believe in you all trying to mass warn everyone just because you don't want to use the block button and you think they're trying to offend or be malicious to you. They're not.

Everyone is going through COVID-19 the same way.

If it helped cheered them and myself up through this pandemic, yes, I would cheer them up with a joke. That's what they are, jokes. Let's not mass ban over them.

But I'm done with this topic, as I'm not going to continue to be lashed out at and my points twisted just because some people can't see the other side or debate peacefully.

You aren't being lashed out at, nor are we twisting your words. You can't honestly say everyone is going through Covid-19 the same way. Some people are simply quarantined while others have lost family members, friends, or homes. You need to consider those suffering the extremes of the situation and sympathize with them especially and how they feel.

I have . But we all are experiencing the same pandemic, just different scenarios. I have considered it, so I wish you'd stop treating me like I've done something?

I'm getting slightly frustrated, as I never wanted this to turn to a back and forth. I wanted to post my opinion and be done, not argue over this.

You say I'm not being lashed out at, but it's being carried on. :/

Edit: Last reply.

I expect someone who has lost a family member will feel more deeply about this situation than someone who is simply inconvenienced. I personally have lost a family member and I'm seeing the pandemic in a completely different perspective.

And dude, me responding isn't lashing out. If you want to stop responding, you don't have to.

You assuming I haven't lost a family member to it is bold. But alright, assume what you want, and think what you will.

Good bye.

I would like to point out that people are allowed to make jokes and cope however they wish, as long as it's not at the expense of other. Which in this case it is, as it makes light of people who have possibly gone through it worse or who simply cope differently. You can't call it a safe space then expose people people yo things that might trigger them. Keep coping jokes to spaces where everyone is alright with them, because coping in a way that harms other Is Not Okay.

( also free speech only protects you from the government, not from people having a discussion with you or from telling you your lion name might be triggering in a lion sim. as much as it is your right, it's ours as well )

Personally I feel people should be able to name lions whatever they want, as distasteful as it might be tho I don't rly care one way or another but I believe if joke names in febuary can be kinda distasteful and not be banned then disease names should be okay too long as they follow site rules ofc n such like that.

all in all i don't rly care 1 way or another what people name their lions nor do i care if mods decide to enforce an idea like this im cool with whatever, tho i'd think is kinda a dumb thing to add now seeing as febuary naming is a thing too n some of those IMO fall along the same lines least in the past they did lol.

A bit in news post maybe reminding people or suggesting them rather? to be considerate when naming might not be a bad idea tho idk

Oh yes because naming ur lion slut or smth is obviously comparable to naming ur lion after a disease that is killing lots of people and is Currently affecting ALL OF US

Just because the mods did not crack down in Feb doesn't mean that we can't suggest they do it now. Having loose regulations and allowing people to name their lions "a child" so that it says "you are now flirting with a child" was a Bad Idea. That doesn't mean this is okay, even if they already made a mistake regarding names in the past.

When you say that people should name their lions whatever they want, do you mean slurs as well? Anything? Absolutely anything?

Besides, if you don't care, why bother commenting? This doesn't seem to affect you either way, so why argue against it if you don't care?
